OT- Top Three Generals of All Time

  • Who ya got? IMO:

    1. Alexander the Great- The only general to have unified both Greece and Persia. His victory over the Phoenicians at the siege of Tyre was one of the greatest military victories in history. They said it could not be taken but he did it in 6 months. He destroyed Darius the 3rd's Persian army which was vastly bigger to conquer Persia. He spread Greek culture to Eastern provinces most did not even know existed. He never lost a battle, and did all of this before his 30th birthday.

    2. Genghis Khan- Built his army with his own two hands so to speak. He united the tribes in Northeast Asia. He crated the largest empire EVER created. His victories spread and spread fast conquering more land in 25 years than the Romans had conquered in 400. He is widely considered by historians to be the most prolific man in history. Roughly, 1 in every 200 men living Asia is a descendant of Genghis Khan.

    3. Hannibal- Largely thought of as the general who brought Rome to her knees. He took his smaller army and marched it over the Alps (which contained elephants and not just men) to invade Rome. in doing so he caught Rome by surprise and won the battle. He used ingenious tactics at the Battle of Cannae to defeat the Roman army which greatly outnumbered his own.

    Oh no he didn't

  • Patton - greatest US General. His Bastogne campaign was brilliant and awesome. The only Allied general that the Axis feared.

Admiral Yi Soon Shin - singlehandedly beat the combined Japanese army and navy despite being outnumbered and being screwed over by his haters in the King's court. He invented the Turtle Ship too. YSS never lost a battle either.

Genghis Khan - yeah we all know his story.

General Motors - solid U.S. based vehicle manufacturer. Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC all have decent choices.

General Hospital - Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running American soap opera currently in production. keeping housewives happy for decades.

His divide and conquer technique was very impressive. But due to the high casualty rate of his men, I have always found him to be a little overrated.

Solid choices. I would argue the merits of an emperor vs general but that is Symantics and not the point of your post.

To pick knits he wasn't the only one feared by the Axis's. The 82nd (gen Gavin) was feared by the axis and given the nickname "devils in baggy pants".

    Patton
    McArthur
If you put those two together and found a way to control the egos wwii would have been over in a week.

    Pershing
    Ridgeway
    Gavin

Ridgeway and Gavin are homer picks for me as I was in the 82nd.

Also if I can get this to embed correctly check the link below, this guy is a great great something or other of mine. Can't get it to embed. Wiki Quanah parker. Good story and a good general.

Biographer Bill Neeley wrote: "Not only did Quanah pass within the span of a single lifetime from a Stone Age warrior to a statesman in the age of the Industrial Revolution, but he never lost a battle to the white man and he also accepted the challenge and responsibility of leading the whole Comanche tribe on the difficult road toward their new existence.

Actually William Wallace (Mel Gibsons guy) was a very good commander by a lot of standards.

Can you imagine the epic showdown that would've been if Patton and Rommel went head to head at Kursk?

Rommel just misses my top 3 because he got screwed by the Nazi high command and subsequently lost to that British wuss Montgomery.

probably, Top 5 worst just for Market Garden alone. Sicily was another one of his clustercensoreds.
