Why does that matter? I fail to see how being able to print human organs means that we can provide wireless coverage to the whole nation without a significant cost. You also have not addressed the issue of government censorship. If the internet is free, cell usage will be free as well. All broadband providers will cease to exist along with telecommunication companies. What you will be left with is a government owned network that they control exclusively. What a stupid idea.

The Internet should be free. I have no qualms about paying for content one online, but being able to access the greatest network humanity has ever created (up to this point) should be available to everyone. Hell, Google is already doing this with their Fiber service. You can pay $300 upfront or $25/mo for a year and get 5mbs/1mbs Internet from then on FREE. It's not the fastest on the planet, no, but it's quite a step away from when we used to pay $50 or $100 or how much (I honestly don't remember) a month or year for 56K dial-up.

You're viewing the Internet as a product. I'm viewing it as a vessel.

I hope you are not in a business field. And I wonder why you want us to live under the government's thumb.

Advocating government enterprise over the private sector is truly idiotic and reserved for high school kids that havent experienced the real world. Life lesson, everything the government touches turns to sh*t.

  • I think the root of the argument here is that people still don't know how the traditional business model will work going forward. Look at Google, since we were talking about them. They offer a PLETHORA of free services (email, web browser, web search, social networking, YouTube, etc. etc. etc.) and their net worth is, what, $250 billion? And unless something's changed since the last time I read up on their business model, the majority of that money comes from advertising. So you've got a company who's primary and "physical" goods and services are offered FREE and yet they're one of the wealthiest company's in the world.

Hell, look at the debates going on right now about what Twitter is actually worth, and they're a company that literally offers ZERO tangible products to its clients and relatively no advertising. And yet they somehow pulled in $100 million in 2011 (I believe). That's a drop in the bucket compared to $250 billion, but remember, Twitter basically doesn't do anything of "value" from a business standpoint. We could have the same discussion about Facebook and their ups and downs since going public.

We're in a weird place when it comes to business now, and it's only going to get weirder. Look at Google: They make the majority of their money from advertising and they already offer a ton of free services. If the key to them getting money is having people hooked up and logged on, why not push for extremely cheap or even free Internet (especially if technology allows for it to be cost effective for them)? Or WiFi? That means more people online for them and thus more advertising revenue.

The Internet and the Digital Age are pushing a lot of "products" out there that are going to really shake up how we see business because we're going to start seeing a lot of non-tangible things and having to decide what or if they're worth anything.

I just want to know the justification behind the program. Why does anyone NEED a cellphone?

Not endorsing the program, I agree it should be scrapped, but the original legislation wanted everyone to have access to phones, then in 2008, the telecommunications lobby told Bush it would be a great idea to expand the program to cellphones, since a cell phone network is cheaper for both the user and the company that runs the network.

Of course it wasn't dead people buying these phones, it was government contracted companies that were selling these phones to dead people.

The idea is if you live in a rural area, in a place like Alabama, and a TV falls on your 2-year old, you would have access to emergency services. Or... If your neighbor decided to rape you, and you hate guns because you are a puzzy liberal, you could use the phone to dial 911.

I guess the original intent was everyone has a right to contact the police, fire, or ambulance, even if they are too poor to own a phone.

You can get Google Fiber (assuming you are in their area of operation) 5mbs/1mbs Internet for a $300 down payment or $25/mo for a year. After that, it is $0/mo. Free. And it will only get more available.

I don't see what the issue is. Google isn't the government, they're a company. And like I said before, they make their money through advertising, so the more people online, the better it is for them. That being the case, would you still be against very, very cheap or even free Internet if Google provided it?
