I'm a corporate lawyer, but by all means, continue on your tirade about me making less than $50K and using SNAP benefits.
On the first point, are you against recognizing the sacrifice these brave men and women have made for our country? If you bothered to read the article, you'd see this line: "the media are allowed access to the ceremonies, but only with the permission of the dead soldiers' family members." You can't possibly believe that there's something wrong with making the American public aware of the very real cost of international conflict.
"People always ask me if I wish I were bigger. I tell them no. I always wanted to be a miniature badass." Dustin Pedroia

I can only speak for those in my area, but it's abused early and often here and the ones doing it seem to be fairly vocal of their accomplishments. Pleeeenty of people in my town paying for their buggy full of ribeye's with food stamps just after filling up their 2013 Tahoe's/Escalades (just one example).
Is that enough info to tell me their life story? No, it's not. Regardless, If its being abused then the holes need to be closed. How's the best way? IDK. What I do know is I was laid-off and actively seeking a new position for 18 months. No one and I mean NO one was hiring. The first 12 months I received no assisyance. The day I was approved for aid $$$ was sad because I never thought I would be in that situation. I never though, not once, that I couldn't make it out unscathed. After I dropped my pride I can truly say we truly needed and appreciated that little bit we received that last 6 months.
Today I co-own a successful business, money isn't an issue and several thousand go into savings regularly. I hope others put forth as much effort as I did before getting help as well as getting back "OFF" assistance ASAP once you get back on your feet. That's how it was designed and it's not being used that way. You're "likely kidding yourself" if you believe otherwise.

I couldn't agree more. There are people out there who work hard & are trying but need the help. I have absolutely no problem with that. But then there are lazy people who pop out kid after kid with no intention of working or paying their own way & expect Uncle Sam & the tax payers to foot the bill. The really sad part is, is they know they are getting over & have no problem with it. There needs to be a complete overhaul of the system. That gets the help to the people that deserve it & want to do their part & weeds out the pigs who take full advantage of it.

Yep I agree. Think of how many more people could be helped if less abused the system. I know two guys, all good health, always hangin out at the house, chillin. Fridge is always full, never out of beer and cigarettes, bling'n 24/7. One hasn't worked in 3 years and hasn't applied for a job in 2. The other hasn't worked in 4 years and hasn't applied in 2.5 years. HOW? Simply unacceptable.

I think this is one of the things that really distorts the conversation about public aid. Many people know "that guy" who abuses the system, but because people who actually benefit from such aid (as in your case, Red) rarely go out and completely publicize that they're receiving aid, people get a skewed picture of who is receiving federal/state aid.

Very much so.
Though, I call FOS on the 2013 Tahoes and steaks. From someone who actually worked as a cashier/bagger and have received assistance, that is the biggest load of crap ever. Never once in my time (or anyone I have ever worked with) have we ever had people pay for nothing but steaks or lobsters (while talking on their iPhones of course) while using a card. Just has never happened.
For every one case where it is abused, there is thousand where it isn't.

I don't think he's being a smartass, he's just giving his personal view that happens to be the opposite side of the coin from you. You've seen this abuse, he hasn't.
I just provided some numbers to back up his (correct) assertion, I wasn't responding to anything you said.
