I'm willing to bet the house they don't let this fail. There will be bickering, but they will get this done. It won't be big, but it will be grand...a little bit of entitlement reform, tax revenue, and some spending cuts, but more importantly: no sequestration.

  • Nothing significant will happen. They'll agree to some pissant amount, bitch about it for months, then have a press conference and act like they did something.

Won't happen. They have to get this done within the next two quarters.

Or what? Sequestration? Which side is that leveraged against?

As if the thought of mandatory cuts would scare House Republicans. It scares lifelong politicians like Boehner, but the majority of the teaparty will be glad to cut the size of govt.

It's leveraged against every business and consumer in America. Trust me. No one wants sequestration, more importantly the people/groups that drive lobbyists. Moreover, its in Boehner's interest to solve it before the next Congress because of representation.

The tea party doesn't have the same influence it used to. It will take compromises before it loses caucus members.

The role of the tea party in terms of actual elected officials vs. people waving flags in rallies was grossly exaggerated, but even still, here's a problem with your analysis: if you look at the net makeup of the GOP house and senate after this election, you'll see that it got a lot more partisan. New England moderates lost, and were replaced more southerners who replaced blue dog democrats. The willingness to make deals decreased, not increased. So we're not just at the status quo ante, we're a step further.

Tax cuts are off the table on one side, serious spending cuts are off the table on the other side. Sequestration could be a good thing IMO -- it's forced compromise of sorts, and injects reality into the equation.

Increased partisanship is irrelevant of the fact that sequestration forces a deal. This isn't a just a debt ceiling debate that has a relatively minimal effect on markets, equity. It's not only in the politicians direct interest to make a bargain, its in the direct interest of those that influence politicians to have a bargain occur. It's simple. Make a deal and compromise over future deficit reduction or cause a recession and more than likely cause another downgrade due to the inability to make payments from a static debt ceiling.
