Official Political and Economic News Thread

  • I know some people get frustrated with all the pol threads, especially in the down-time in the spring. So after some inspiration from the rival threads,I thought we could try to de-clutter the board with this thread.

Post political and economic news. Discuss it. Flame if you like. I'm sure the same rules apply though(keep it civil,no cussing etc.)

  • LOL at posting a corn article. The most governmentally manipulated crop possible. Your agenda is awesome. I will check back in.

Maybe Monsanto could hire you as a "Thank you for smoking" type lobbyist/representative.

WTF? I posted an article from Reuters about farming. It's economic.

By the way, censored corn subsidies and censored big corporations in farming.

I dont understand the love for stereotyping OTB.

Anyways, if this country doesn't reign in the genetic modification of food and the use of antibiotics/steroids and the feeding of unnatural products to beef cows we will seriously wake up 25 years from now and realize half the country has cancer and other ailments.

These latifundia growing food all the wrong ways will be one of the deaths of us.

I agree with you by the way and that's why I posted it (not what you think).

There is not enough competition in agriculture and the subsides do not help.

Our policies reflect the 1930s and 40s and not the 21st century.

  • I agree. It's going to happen as the global economy inevitably sees the services bubble burst that we go back to the manufacturing of tangible goods with food being of the utmost value.

America should be the global leader in the production of naturally produced foods. Standards for farms should go through the roof while getting tax breaks and zero interest loans if you ask me.

  • He HAS to pick a formidable conservative. I think the assumption has been it will be Rubio and I think that would check out as far as I know. A lot of Americans would wonder about Marco's ability to lead the nation given him being 2nd in line. So that's the biggest negative.

  • Polls close in GOP primaries in Maryland,Wisconsin and DC soon. Looks like Romney will probably sweep all three.

I didn't get a chance to read in detail, but from glossing it seemed really extreme for his case.

This is the problem with law. It's not black and white. I read the opinions and agree with both on some points. I understand the majority opinions' view on the balance between unreasonable search and safety of prison population. I also understand the dissenting opinions' view that this particular search was unreasonable though considering the minor offense. I think that the reasonable search for health and safety protocol(disease, gang signs, hidden weapons in VISUAL sight) is understandable for his case, but it is too much for the offense given to have the search of this magnitude.

Unemployment rate as reported by the Dept of Labor is meaningless as the current administration has changed the way it is calculated. Under the old way (pre-2008), the unemployment is still hovering around 11% (count all those looking for work but can't get a job). The new way discounts those that are no-longer receiving unemployment benefits (they aren't counted in the potential employed pool). This does not count the under-employed (the accountant flipping burgers or people working PT that want FT jobs), this number is around 20%.

Don't Be Fooled, The Obama Unemployment Rate Is 11% - Forbes

If discouraged workers were counted, the unemployment rate today would be a far more realistic 11%, better reflecting the suffering in the real economy under Obamanomics.

  • Can a liberal give me the PrObama side of things in regards to how he's called into question the power of the Judicial system?

I am telling you right now, it doesn't take Foxnews to get a person to believe Obama believes the President should have total power at this point. The dude could do some truly unconstitutional things in his second term.

I'd like to hear how what he said was not taken out of context.

He did not question the power of the judicial ranches to review, but essentially said that he believed the law to be "duly constituted", therefore if that is held to be true (not saying it is,but that is what he believes and therefore meant) then overturning a "duly constituted" law would be judicial activism.

I have no idea how anyone got questioning the power of the SCOTUS to strike down "his" law.

He's centralizing power left and right and then makes shady statements about the power of the Justices. It is what it is.
