  • *Racewalking. And as silly as it looks, it's intense. Those guys can go 20k in about an hour and 15 minutes.

  • I had a neighbor growing up who was in the '76 and '84 Olympics who was a race walker. After school we would be playing and you'd see him walking er.. running or whatever going by. We used to make fun of him until my dad told us he was in the Olympics, then I thought he was cool.

I cannot believe I'm going to say this, but did they really cancel women's softball as an Olympic sport, but they have this garbage. I'd rather watch the wnba than this mall walking race. OK that was a little to far, I would almost rather watch wnba.....

  • Interesting that people make fun of race walking but celebrate all the different swimming strokes. It's the same principal: modify your motion in such a way that you aren't going your fastest, and whoever can go the fastest using the modified motion wins that race.

Lol - swimming/walking/volleyball whatevs... Summer olympics is beyond retarded, it's basically a collection of people who weren't good enough to do popular sports so they tried these ones (obvious exaggeration but you get my gist). And every 4 years we put them on a pedestal and we all pretend like we care about these sports/athletes for 2 weeks because football hasn't started yet. And every year they keep adding more dumb activities haha

I don't think it's stupid personally. Never had it phrased that way but it makes sense. We know the most efficient way to swim through water, but we take the inefficient, slower ones and make events out of them. From a coldly logically perspective, how is the backstroke different from a race where the runners backpedal? And honestly, who wouldn't watch the 50m backpedal hoping someone falls? I watched Olympic trampoline just to see someone fall off that thing.

    osceolafan

  • I saw trampoline couple days ago. Can't believe they call that a sport.

Yeah, lets see you backstroke for 50 meters as fast as they do. Hell lets see you backstroke correctly for any distance. Just sayin.

Lol I'm Canadian, i cheer for bama cause we pretty much only get CBS up here so gotta pick someone in the SEC if you want to see atleast a couple games a year...there's virtually no college highlights either.

But be honest, if you don't think that a good group of athletes in the NFL couldn't compete in these events had they not opted to play football, your kidding yourself.

Certain sports take certain skills and technique. Being athletic only takes you so far.

I get that, I know my statement was an exaggeration, but I feel that a lot of NFL receivers and DB's could compete in the games had they chosen to train in those sports, especially track & field events.

But until any of those sports start producing cash, your not gonna see the top athletes playing them. The kids aren't growing up aspiring to be the worlds best javeliners.

Kinda OT but how isn't rugby a sport in these games while a lot of these events are is mind boggling.

Most sports that already have important and profitable international competitions don't occur at the Olympics (Baseball,Cricket,Rugby). The only reason soccer does is because of the age limit.

To the rest of the post, money is irrelevant in how athletic someone is. You can't seriously tell me that decathletes or Iron Men or swimmers aren't as athletic as a football player. Athleticism isn't always about being strong and fast to hit people.

The point I'm trying to make is most of these kids grow up wanting to be football/bball players, A. cause they are popular and the kids look up to the current players and B. The money.

The talent pool of athletes trying out for these Olympic events in the US diluted cause of that. Your on BOL, bbd posts tons of results of football players doing extremely well in track events during HS, most who don't continue doing track once they're in college.

And as far as the decathlon, a DB displays atleast half of the skills necessary to perform in those events in a single play - speed, jumping, exploding whatever, and on top of that they are physical. I'll admit swimming is a different animal, don't even know if those guys know how to swim.

But take Julio as an example, 1 month of training and look what he did at the combine. Similar motions to decathlon events. If he had spent 4/8 years of his life training for the olympics, who knows? Their isn't a doubt that he has the athletism to be there.

You are falsely assuming that since they didn't choose or succeed in football, that Oylmpic athletes aren't as athletic or as good as football players. I don't think that's necessarily true. Exceptionally? Probably.

Lets see you racewalk or backpedal full speed for any distance. Most people would DQ at racewalk because it is natural to break out into a trot. In a backpedal most would just fall on their back. I'm not saying the backstroke isn't hard. I'm saying their is no logical difference between making events out of the inefficient methods to travel through water and making events out of the inefficient methods to travel across land.
