Original (much better) plot for The Godfather: Part III

  • I was just reading up on the trilogy some since I'm watching Part II right now, and I had no idea that the original plot for Part III was so awesome (imo). I knew about Duvall getting written out due to a salary dispute but didn't know the story would've been different. I just assumed they plugged B.J. Harrison (George Hamilton) into Hagen's role and kept the story pretty much the same. Anyway, thoughts?

According to The Godfather Part III, Hagen has already died before the timeframe of the film, 1979–1980. There is no specific indication in the film as to when or how he died, except that it was before the ordination of his son, Andrew, a Roman Catholic priest.

This was not the original plan for the Hagen character. Originally, Hagen was to be the chief antagonist to Michael in The Godfather Part III, as Hagen, the adopted German-Irish son, vied for control of the Corleone Empire over the dwindling family and aging Michael.

Rather than replace Duvall, who had come to be identified with the character (and thus risk later lawsuits by Duvall), the producers instead quietly wrote Duvall out, having him killed offscreen, and setting up an entirely new (and much disliked) plot involving Michael Corleone versus the Vatican.

  • I have a penis so of course I loved the first two but after 3 attempts I have yet to get more than about an hour into III.

Wasn't Hagen supposed to be a good bit older than Michael? that was always the impression I got, particularly in Godfather Part I.

He's definitely older, but I don't think they ever said by how much. I think the "aging" line was moreso probably meant to be about the stress of Michael having been the Don for so long. Not necessarily that Hagen is younger but maybe less beaten down.

  • Wow that would have been a much better plot. Put Hagen into the mix and take out Coppolas daughter who did a horrible job as Mary and you'd have it on par with the other two, or at least somewhat closer.

I've always defended Part 3 because I feel like people compare it to the other 2 which are timeless classics and that's why they think it sucks. I think on it's own part 3 is a good movie. It's a decent mobster movie.

Would've been awesome. Duvall is every bit as good as Pacino. Would've loved to have seen it.

Yup. He's an interesting dude, too. He's had some good interviews on the Howard Stern Show over the years. Talks a good bit about the Godfather movies in those, as well.
