Over signing rule ?

  • VaHorn said...

Are you an honest to god idiot or are you just funning us? Most schools have a huge number of juniors and seniors that have never started and may never see the field in a meaningful way. Every one of them counts against the 85 player limit. Texas was always that way. So instead of taking 25-28 players they take 15. At Alabama every single one of them would have been forced to transfer, taken a medical redshirt, etc. It has meant that they have gotten the equivalent of an extra recruiting class every 3 to 4 years. The 25/85 rule does nothing to stop this. It doesn't apply at all times. It applies at the start of fall practices. have noticed more turnover of players at Texas in the last 2 years. Bad luck? Or an infusion of SEC coaches?

So Bama signing seven more recruits than Texas over the last four years is equivalent to a signing class?

You really are bad at this.

    Bama has "forced" several out

Brandon Moore - starter/2deep at Texas ring a bell ?
Darrington Sentimore - starter at Tennessee
    Corey Smith- starter WVU

i would call this culling the dead wait lol

    needed to also mention ...
    a) no coach wants to replace quality expierenced reserves w/ quality newbs
    b) all the above had trouble cracking the three-deep before they were "washed-out".

    "great teams have great backups."

I'm pretty sure athletic scholarships have some strings attached. A kid can't just come in and not try in class or practice.

I have seen many guidelines for athletic scholarship. The only objective stipulation is to be enrolled at PSU (for example). The next part is subjective: you need to "be proficient in football". That is it.

    Yes, they are.

Do you understand what objective and subjective means??? I don't think you do.

I find that hard to believe.

  • Mack Brown's only strength is recruiting. That is why Texas has won more games over his tenure than Alabama by far.

    For 2003-2007:

    Texas - 102
    Alabama - 127

Because to be elligible to play, you have to have a certain GPA in the eyes of the NCAA. I'm surprised its not doubly stipulated into the scholarship. Other things dealing with elligibility as well.

Someone posted numbers from a different five-year period and Alabama's figure was 140. Selective timing indeed.

I agree. Some people ITT seem to be projecting their own hatred of their program into hatred of other programs. Feel sorry for them.

It isn't. Players who are under 2.0 GPA and ineligible to play still are allowed to have their scholarship.

That's garbage if that's true for more than one year. What about crimes or something a little more subjective like behavior? I mean if a kid starts a fight and hurts another player, a coach should have every right to take away a kid's scholarship and send him home.

I know. It must kill you that your only victory EVER against Texas came when we lost our starting quarterback in the first series and had to put in a back up with zero experience. I hope we play another nine times. Who knows? You might squeeze out another victory. 2-15-1 sounds much better. It would be great if you had an academic reputation to fall back on, but you are barely accredited.

Once a scholarship is renewed each year, it cannot be taken away until the scholastic year ends. Actually, it isn't taken away at that time, it simply isn't renewed. And there is nothing in the language of the guideline (which is basically a legal contract) stating anything about fighting or breaking the law, ect. They would still get the scholarship. Now, they would probably be kicked out of school if it was something serious, but the scholarship itself is still there. The next year it would be gone.

Texas refused to play A&M during the regular season. We have never refused to play A&M in a bowl. You are either 13 or a special-needs adult. I'm starting to suspect that it is the latter. Or is you might say, the ladder.

    So what stipulates renewal?

    So what stipulates renewal?

It depends on the guideline. A little known fact is that a "scholarship" for an athlete is usually several scholarships. One player can have 5 (or more) scholarships.

Generally speaking, a scholarship is renewed if the player is still on the team and has eligibility left. But there's the rub. Technically, ANY student who is "proficient in football" is eligible for many of the football specific athletic scholarships, but it is the athletic department who administers them, so obviously, they will only give them to students on the football team. But be clear, there is absolutely nothing in the language of the scholarship stipulating athletic success as a requirement to keep a scholarship.
