How do you think you have $3,000 in your account only to find out you have $30.00? Did he deposit a check and it just didn't clear yet? I don't even know a bank that would extend and overdraft that big. That's just bad business.

  • Several years ago I ran up almost $1000 in overdraft fees b/c I was heading into the weekend and went to transfer money from one acct to another and you have to click submit and yes like 4 times and I just did it that first time, so the account didnt have much money in it.

  • I had a friend of mine that had his debit card number(not the card just the number) stolen while camping but they didn't do anything with it for 3 months then hit it hard. He always kept several thousand in the account so he never balanced to statement. He got hit pretty hard too.

Believe it or not banks will do this if you have a good record of depositing on a regular basis. I deposit two child support checks in my account every month on the 1st and 15th in addition to checks from jobs. I double scheduled a mortgage payment one month and found out that both went thru when I was overdrawn on my account by a large amount. I went to the bank to ask why they would even put that through and they said it was because I always have money in my account and that I do not occur overdrafts. They take a gamble that you will bounce checks so that they can hit you with fees and be good for it based on your past.

This is why you need to have a personal relationship with someone where you bank, preferably the local branch manager, that way when they try to pull crap like this you call Steve and say fix it or my money is going somewhere else.

  • I bank out of wachovia and set up a notice to alert me via email whenever I get under a certain amount. Now if it wasnt for my Blackberry, I would never check my email

Yeah this is why I always used to bank with small local banks. I banked with SouthTrust for a long time and my ex-husband was a big account for them. I never had to balance a check book because if my account was overdrawn they would pay it and then call me to let me know that I needed to transfer money or make a deposit. I was never charged a fee. Wow was it a reality check when Wachovia bought them out.
