PC building ?

  • Been a while (8 years?) since I've built a PC. I'm looking to build a home-theater/gaming PC that will hook up to my HDTV and have a similar form factor to a console. Some of what I plan to use it for is:

    • General internet use
    • HBOGO/Hulu+/Netflix/Justin.tv/etc. (planning on dumping cable for good)
    • Skype with family/friends on the big screen
    • Plex (going to have the media server on the HD; wireless accessible so I can use it on my laptop, too)
    • Game emulation (MAME, SNES, N64, etc.)
    • PC gaming (doesn't have to be top-of-the-line; plan on playing a lot of my older games but would like to stay current for a bit)
    • Will use both a mouse/board and controller(s)

What I'm wanting to do is get a decent rig that I can fit into an HTPC case, such as the one linked. Thoughts? Not just on the case, but on the idea in general? It's been a while since I've shopped for computer gear so I'm relearning what's new and current but any and all recommendations I'm appreciative to have.

  • Or perhaps a full-size HTPC case (regular ATX, not micro). One thing I do want is for the unit to not look like I just have a desktop tower sitting near my TV. I'd like it to fit in my entertainment center.

  • Any way you can hide your PC with a long cable? With both a wireless keyboard and mouse you could have the tower tucked away. I've built three PCs but I used my buddy to pretty much build it when it comes to components. Also, make sure you spend they money on a great graphics card.

  • What's your budget? I would recommend grabbing one of the quad core Phenom II processors and then one of the upper end Radeons. For media-intensive stuff, it's all about powerful GPU.

  • I recommend you go to reddit and give them your budget and what you want to use it for and let the nerds come and get you the best computer you can get for the price.

The budget is undecided at the moment, but since I don't have to buy a monitor specifically for the PC (the HDTV will also be hooked up for my 360) that can free up some room. That, and this won't be happening for a bit so I have some time to save... I'd say under $1000.
