PLEASE help the families in Conn, they will need SUPPORT

  • The average per capita of Newtown is like 90,000 dollars, guys. While I agree that donating to something is a noble idea, I doubt the families need any money, even if it is in the good intentions that you're talking about.

I think any donations would be better used for a charity - for children or maybe promoting mental health support. I dunno, just a thought.

That's a good idea GB, there are probably already multiple charities that could be donated to that are working to cut this sort of thing from happening. Working with children from the start and keeping them moving towards something positive.

Unfortunately, people can snap at any time as we saw here.

I mean, like I said, I understand where the idea of donating to the families is coming from, but how will they get the money themselves? Unless we can donate directly to their bank accounts, how does the money get sent to the correct place and distributed correctly?

By mail.. We'll probably pick out just 5 families bc we obviously can't help them all.. The single parents and ones that need the money.. Either that or donate to some sort of charity.. Anyways, we want to do SOMETHING, it's better than doing nothing to a lot of us. We'll figure something out in the next few days.. Still to early, we're going to let them grieve for a week or 2 before we take action.

  • So you have everyone's address? I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm just asking.
No one else thinks it would be sort of odd to send 1000 (or whatever) to a family who just had a child killed? Again, downvote villians, I'm just stating how I feel about this whole thing. I think donating money to a cause is a great idea. I just don't know if this is the right way to go about it.

Names were released yesterday. Not hard to figure out the rest. Sending money to families cuts out any question of where it ends up. They decide how it should be used.

We don't know what we're doing.. This thread is all brainstorming and thank you for the ideas. We might donate to the school.. Don't know yet..

The Families would not get upset if they got $1,000 in the mail and a letter or something.. Funeral and Therapy costs money, don't see anyone getting mad at that.

But, I mean. OK, so a family's house burns down, or there is a natural disaster, fine, money is a great idea. But what good is 1000 dollars going to do to someone who lost a child. Here is 1000 dollars, hope this assists in your life-changing grief. Oh well, I'm outnumbered here, I know.

  • There's a charity called the National Alliance for Grieving Children. Money could be donated there to support those children who were witnesses to this crime, too.

I think any donations would be better used for a charity - for children or maybe promoting mental health support. I dunno, just a thought.

I initially said that it should go to a charity that was designated for violence against children from the get go. That would have been my first choice but also liked the idea of donating the money to the school itself. I think it would serve better going to a charity or school than the families themselves personally. I'm not going to care whatever the board decides though. As long as that is what the majority of the board decides, I will back it up. Like Les and AG said, at least we are trying to do something.

This is going to have the Blue Board 247's name behind it, so it should be what the majority of the board and those donating on this board feel is the best. I trust the boards opinion and feel better helping out whichever way I can that is decided. I'm not going to let personal feelings on how I personally feel would be the best way to donate get in the way of helping in general.

Like Les said, if you want to donate to a charity personally then you can do that. I personally choose to go with the rest of this board.

  • I wouldn't be opposed to donating to a mental health awareness program or organization in the name of the victims. Will it help this community personally? No. However, it could prevent another episode similar to this.

  • Late to the discussion, but I'm in. To further the brainstorming, I don't know how you choose a handful of families that have all lost something so equally precious. The school, everyone at the school, will suffer the aftermath of this for years to come. I would rather the funds go to a pool that will be used for everyone at Sandy Hook. The United Way support fund referenced in the article above looks like a good option.

If you have enough for every family, I think the gesture would be appreciated regardless of socio-economic status. But I don't know how you choose a handful of them.
