Don't know how I feel about it. I always rooted for PSU until the scandal came out but I'm not sure how I feel about them now.

Not classy, they're doing everything possible to avoid getting sued by the Paternos. No matter how you feel about it or what the result of the lawsuit would be, a lawsuit between the Paternos and PSU is bad for the school, so they want to do whatever possible to avoid it.

I agree with this. So far about the only intelligent move that PSU has made in this whole situation was hiring O'Brien. Everything else has been to try and save face and/or minimize damage. It's amazing to me that so many men and women who have reached such heights in their lives/careers can make so many dumb decisons in the handling of this whole thing.

  • PSU fans are generally pretty cool. I feel bad for the players who were caught in the crossfire. The previous administration and the culpable parties can go to hell though. That said, please beat out Wisconsin in the division!

As far as I know (and I hope someone closer will correct me if I am wrong), Paterno was a tenured professor. They were within their rights to relieve him as football coach, but would have to give him the opportunity to go through the same proceedures that they would have to use for any tenured professor. That obviously did not happen...

Everything they gave him was contractually obligated - and they STILL tried to coerce an agreement out of the Paternos to say they would never sue them. When that didn't work, they said we'll name the stadium after Joe, if you don't agree to sue us. Sue told them to goto hell.

This is pure cowardice from the BOT. They realize they made a huge mistake in scapegoating an innocent man and a living legend, someone who means more to Penn State then these idiots ever realized. Rather than own up and admit they made a mistake, they're desperately trying to cover their mistakes. It's incredible really. I never thought my University was this retarded.

The previous administration is the key word here. ADMINSTRATION. The PSU admin had the opportuniuty to stop Sandusky and send his a$$ to jail a decade ago. Curley, Schultz, failed. Spanier failed by refusing to do his job and demanding details. The BOT failed by failing to provide oversight of Penn State administration. Yet these idiots are still in power. It's incredible really. Nothing has changed. We still have an unchanged power structure with the exact same oversight rules.

  • Just so everyone knows, appoo doesn't speak for all PSU fans here. I absolutely will not get into the debate here, but I respectfully disagree with appoo that Joe has no blame in this. I do agree the BOT and administration are/were beyond incompetent as well, but I do not believe Joe is blameless here. Plenty of blame to go around to many, many people.

The trial has been tight lipped. My feeling is that there's a money trail between PSU admin (Graham Spanier), the Board of Trustees, the Second Mile, and Tom Corbett - all designed to delay the arrest of Jerry Sandusky. Spanier knew what this would do to his University and didn't want this to come out, Corbett wanted the campaign donations from the second mile, and as the AG was intentionally putting Sandusky on the back burner (he only had one ONE officer on the case) until he won the Governor's office, the second mile knew they were out of business the instant the scandal broke. All 3 big parties - PSU Admin, Tom Corbett, and the second mile admin - are screwed IMO.

Did I say he was blameless? I said he was innocent. Huge difference. Any error Joe made, were made with positive intentions. He didn't do much follow up after he turned this thing over to Curley and Schultz (he did follow up with McQuery - the only person he had any responsibility over) because he trusted them to do their job, and he didn't want to appear to be influencing the investigation. Was that a mistake? probably, I don't know if I were in his position I would have followed up - but if there's a mistake there, it was an honest mistake, and done with positive intentions. IMO that makes a man innocent, but not blameless.

The people who are NOT innocent are those that refused to do their jobs because they wanted to stop a scandal from exploding.

The BOT has entirely too much power. This scandal broke the way it did, because the BOT simply didn't do it's job. That kind of power shouldn't exist. The power of Penn State belongs to the PSU faculty, students, and alumni - and my hope is a new power structure would reflect that. A PSU senate/congress should have ultimate power over the BOT - and direct oversight over PSU adminsitration.

yes. I believe the BOT fired Paterno to escape any kind of media investigation on their actions over the last decade. It worked to.

  • Bottom line, Penn State - as a university - owes a great deal. We hired an administration to run our beloved University, and they failed miserably in the worst kind of way. This has nothing to do with athletics either. It's actually incredible to think of how clean we run our athletic programs, but how corrupt our administration is. I would much prefer the opposite of that.

The senate/congress made up of who?...just saying that if the people who have a dog in the fight are given the power to run the fight, even with the best intentions, they will inevitably make decisions that benefit their contemporaries, because that is what has framed their point of view...

A rolling group of elected officials. Tenured profs only along, upperclassmen undergrads. 2 year terms for students, 4 year terms for profs, and that's it you're done. They would be responsible for oversight of PSU admin, and both the BOT and President would have to make regular, public reports to them regarding all on-going activity at Penn State, to include alleged crimes by employees and donations the university has made. They would also vote on any change in the laws of Penn State that were suggested by PSU admin/BOT.

I don't know what he would sue for, but clearly the school is worried about it as they offered to name the field after Paterno in exchange for the family not suing them (to which the Paterno family said "screw you").
