Don't forget the part where it would be cheaper for large companies to pay the penalty rather than provide insurance. 2000+ whatever tax credit doesn't add up to what most pay per employee.

Most firms will still want to offer coverage though to be able to hire top talent. Healthcare can still be a bargaining chip.

The penalty is stiffest for 30 to 50 sized firms.

    Really?

Oh, you are talking about a tax credit that might be available in 2014. It may be available to a minimal number of small businesses or it may not.

As of NOW, the overwhelming majority of small businesses will never see a tax credit. In fact, the overwhelming majority of small businesses with choose the government option for their employees because it will be cheaper than the alternative.

To qualify this statement, I am talking about small businesses with less than 50 employees who currently provide healthcare insurance.

The tax credit has been available since 2010 (at a lower rate the 2014 and beyond rate). It is on a sliding wage and size scale.

There is no government option. If they are under thirty, they aren't penalized. If they aren't required, people get PRIVATE insurance

Look at Sf2k's company. They'd get the tax credit.

So, have you read any part of the ACA?

Not really, but if we elect congress to do a job shouldn't they. Its their job. Why pass a bill you haven't read. Of course I'm SURE you read the whole bill & completely agree with it 100%. If not please tell me what part of the 2000 page bill you disagree with. I mean since you read the entire bill.

  • You should talk to an accountant who has small business clients.

Here is an excerpt from the current tax law... "Employers that have less than 25 employees and MUST pay at least 50% of the employees health insurance premiums.
You are not allowed to included premiums of the owners or employees who are relatives of the owners in this credit.
The average wage for the employees that do qualify, must be less than $25,000 per year to get full 35% tax credit and you lose entire credit if average wages are greater than $50,000 per year."

If you think this favors small business, than good luck with that.

    Sorry, but you're wrong.

    It's not less than $25,000.

There are still 4 million elligible businesses according to the IRS.

Let me ask you a simple question and I'd like an honest answer. Since you're fairly independent, an average employer pays around 6000.00 per employer In health insurance costs. My company pays roughly 60% of our health costs so 6k is about right. The government has made alaw saying that if they don't cover an employers health care cost they are subject to a 2000.00 penalty. If your a buisness and want to maximize profits, what's the company going to do? This isn't about the bill causing job growth problems. It's more about companies doing away with it all together and everyone eventually having no choice but to get on a governement plan. This bill isnt going to reduce costs. Thats absurd. This is Obama's and liberal hopes. One step closer to their ultimate goal.

I apologize. I misread what you said. I read is as wage per, not average wages. Nevertheless, we are dealing with small firms that don't have to (unless they are over the penalty size limit), but can. So like Sk2k's work could qualify for a partial credit. They are still getting a tax credit and that is saving them money. I'm just trying to rebutt the "job-killing" myth. Most small businesses are very small. They eithe go individual or are given PARTIAL assistance. For the bigger firms, they already provide healthcare anyways, so they just have to abide by the rules (yes numerous, but I've already stated my reservations for portions of the law). So the firms that get squeezed are the small number of higher-level small to medium sized firms that are usually low-wage, low-margin outfits like resturants and grocery stores.

  • Didn't read the entire thread to see if it was brought up, but Obamacare doesn't take place til next year, so these layoffs have nothing to do with that. Probably has more to do with the $250 million lawsuit Papa John's just loss.

Lets be real. If this particular company wanted to maximize profits like that, wouldn't they already have cut out employee health costs? Only difference now is the penalty for doing so.

You guys are so intent on making ish up that any real criticism of the law gets drowned out.
