Penn State wants to leave the B1G

    Here's another thing...

Do you NOT think that Ohio State has a pretty large alumni base on the east coast (not to mention all the other Big Ten schools)? Not sure if any of you have traveled outside of the hills of central pa, but Ohio State fans are freaking everywhere. If psu leaves/gets kicked out. Do you really think that Nobody east of Pittsburgh will care about The Big Ten.

Yes, psu has the more east coast alumni/fans than any other SINGLE team in The Big Ten... BUT... They don't have the ONLY fans/alumni on the east coast.

The Big Ten has been around for 100 years... well before penn state, well before even Ohio State.

Here's the difference between me and all of you. If Ohio State...for whatever reason...was no longer a part of The Big Ten. I have ZERO doubt that The Big Ten would be just fine.

Do you see what I did there???

    Probably not.

No one says the Big Ten cant survive without Penn State and if any PSU fan thinks that they are crazy. The Big Ten is better off financially with PSU than without, i think thats a fair statement.

I agree 100%... But others didn't make that claim...

I guess I just don't understand why there is so much anger directed at The Big Ten. I also read another psu site... B&W (can't remember if it is rivals or scout) and they just kill The Big Ten. It makes it impossible for someone like me, who LOVES The Big Ten, not become defensive.

I don't understand what The Big Ten Conference and teams did that make penn state fans so bitter. I can't imagine that another conference would not have done the same thing, if not worse, to penn state.

Honestly, it all started when many voters in Big Ten country voted for Nebraska instead of PSU for the 94 national championship. The most enfuriating area was Ohio. PSU smacked OSU down that year by something like 63-14 (I forget the real score), and NOT ONE AP voter from Ohio voted PSU number one. Not one.

    Here's a map...

    Here's a map...

What does that have to do with The Big Ten?

Look at that map... psu got more votes (5) in "Big Ten Country" then any other area! Heck, nobody in "ACC county" voted for penn state

Also, last time I checked, media writers don't make any decisions for The Big Ten conference.

I understand that would upset psu fans, but why be upset at The Big Ten Conference...makes no sense to me.

  • Also... 2 pa voters voted for nebraska! WTF

I get if the vote was close that would make someone more upset, but it wasn't even close.

I honestly don't remember the details (I was at that game in state college, and I would have voted psu NC), but my guess is this has more to do with where the teams started. Back then (really even today) if a team starts out in front and keeps winning it is near impossible to make a jump. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that penn state started out ranked lower then nebraska that year.

There is a map out there that shows AP votes for Michigan in 1997,,, guess what? They cleaned up in Big Ten country (as they should have).

You know that there was an attitude from the start that PSU shouldn't be in the Big Ten. Back when we had 11 teams, the topic of expansion would come up and there was a very large group that wanted to go back to 10 and kick PSU out instead of moving to 12. You look at Nebraska's transition into the conference, and they have been accepted since day one. That has not happened with PSU. I sure as hell didn't see Delany going to bat for us in regards to our sanctions like he did with OSU's. It just is what it is.

They were from PITTsburgh back when PITT and PSU had a real rivalry where the hate level was higher than even OSU and Michigan.

No. PSU became #1 during the season and lost it because Paterno took his foot off the gas against Indiana and they scored a couple of meaningless TDs at the end of an otherwise beatdown (we were up by three scores and controlled the game). After that, Nebraska was voted #1 and held that position. And unlike Michigan a few years later, we did not end up splitting the title with them... something that probably would have happened if PSU got Big Ten country support in the votes.

I don't know... let's say that's true, that psu wasn't "embraced" the way nebraska was. Don't you think psu fans should take some of the blame? From my perspective - not calling it a fact, just my opinion - I have felt that psu has had a chip on their shoulder since they joined. Felt they were better, felt the "midwestern farmer schools" were beneath them .

    It's a 2 way street.

But again, the media vote has nothing to do with the Big Ten Conference. The fact you get mad at The Big Ten because of media voters STILL does not make any sense to me.

Now where do you think you got that notion that PSU thought that "midwestern farmer schools" were beneth them? You have been to PSU... we are a huge ag school. The only reason you think that is because the MEDIA said that PSU would come in and thump everyone. That didn't come from PSU fans, that came from the media. But Big Ten fans have latched onto it and used it as a rallying cry against us. I can't tell you how many time I have heard fans from the Big Ten say "yeah, like you guys were supposed to come in and dominate us" in a snide way.

The fact of the matter is, many, many people did not want PSU in the Big Ten in 1990 and they do not want PSU in the conference now. I'm not saying it is a majority, but it is quite a large number of people who feel that way. The fact that Big Ten fans are questioning our value to the league in this thread speaks for itself.

1st... the very 1st psu fan I talked to at the 1st Ohio State-penn state game in Columbus said exactly that...I swear to God. It was a chick, maybe 25 years old.

Also, I didn't think that psu fans felt that way until I started reading your message boards and all the Big Ten hate. There is a thread on BWI that says they hate the Big Ten more than sandusky...and most are agreeing with it! It's beyond insane.

But don't you see the fallacy in your basic argument?

You are blaming the the other Big Ten schools for believing the media, but when the media votes against penn state you blame the Big Ten. Why don't you blame the media for the bias against penn state rather than Big Ten schools?

In other words... if the media sells a bias to the Big Ten it is the Big Ten's fault. If the media sells a bias to penn state, it's the Big Tens fault confused

You forgot to add something... IN YOUR OPINION is absolutely was. Level of hate is not something that has substance and it can not be measured. Everything and everyone is different.

You can certainly believe that the psu-pitt rivalry was the most "hate-filled" and others can believe that Ohio State-scum is better and another guy believe that auburn-alabama is more hate filled. Everyone would be right...in THEIR respective opinions.

At least OSU/Michigan has a little respect between the teams. Pitt and PSU had none of that. Heck, Paterno's wife was scared to go to Pittsburgh because of death threats. It wasn't a "nice" rivalry in the least.

The only thing I see is a bunch of Big Ten fans putting down one of their member institutions and their fans. That what this thread is really about. Undervaluing PSU and throwing hate our way. It's just indicative of the general view by many of PSU in this conference. That you cannot deny.

I certainly see that also, but the difference is I also see 1 of the institutions of that conference condemning said conference for problems they created themselves.

Can you at least see that? Don't you think penn state should share 50% in this dysfunctional relationship???

You're missing my point. You can't decide for me or anyone else which teams have the more hate filled or more bitter rivalry. In all honesty you're kind of proving my point about the other issues we have discussed.

I have no doubt and no problem that you THINK that psu-pitt was the stronger rivalry.

But you certainly can't tell me how I should think. I'm not going to tell you how to think.

There is no data you can produce that can prove your point.

    These are all OPINIONS.

We could line up the centerfold of every playboy model and each of us rank them. I am sure we would rank them differently. That doesn't make one of us wrong or right. These are all opinions that are neither right nor wrong.

The original point was that Pittsburgh writers did not like PSU. That was all. You are taking this way too personally. Without spiting hairs, all you need to know is that PSU and Pitt hated each other back in 1994.

Created it how? Do you remember how close the vote was to allow us into the league? We got the bare minimum of votes needed. The anti-PSU attitude was around from day one. We are just reacting to it. Now if that reaction fuels the fire, so be it.

    I'm talking about sandusky.

I have no clue about the vote and don't care. Again your proving my point. You have a chip in your shoulder that weighs 10 tons about The Big Ten and you just don't see it.

I think I am being exceptionally reasonable, I think you see The Big Ten as ABSOLUTELY against penn state. Just like you say the psu-pitt game was ABSOLUTELY the more bitter rivalry.

In my opinion when people talk in absolutes they really aren't listening to any other side of an issue. I try to never speak in absolutes. I think absolutes are for children and imbeciles. I'm neither, so I think we are probably done.
