Phil Steele's Bowl Predictions

  • wps88 said...

Music City Bowl a disappointment for Auburn?

I think so. I would be disappointed with anything less than a New Year's Day bowl.

Should have the best defense in the country.

I believe Steele is going with the "defense wins Championships" logic.

A solid chance of 9-10 guys going in next years NFL draft if a few guys leave early.

Last time I checked teams with highly ranked recruiting classes play in the MNC game so I would think that would be a logical variable for success.

Will probably still lose 2 games or so though.

Still, his prediction is relying solely on potential. SHOULD have a great defense. SHOULD improve on the OL. SHOULD take advantage of their great recruiting. Sorry, but this just doesn't stand to reason.

  • Bama, LSU, and USC are the top teams coming into the season. Until they lose, everyone else is shuffling for position.

agreed but i dont get the USC love. they are talented but razorthin at depth. 1 or 2 injuries could really derail that team. most teams can sustain 5-6 injuries, USC loses a couple key guys and its over. theyre my second most overrated team behind FSU, and really its neck and neck

I'll take the CFA bowl anyday.

ill make it easy for you

WILL have a great defense. we only lost 1 starter of note

WILL improve on the oline. really, it really cant be any worse than last year. we might as well have had just a center, 1 tackle and a qb

WILL take advantage of great recruiting. our defensive depth is the best ive seen in a long time. we will keep plugging fresh guys into the game constantly.

it all comes down to execution, coaching, and attention to detail for us. if we are focussed, look out. if not 9-3 here we come

I guess I wouldn't be terribly disappointed with the CFA Bowl. However, if that meant we went 7-5 again I would be pretty pissed. I also wouldn't want to play UVA again.

That's true for any team though. If McCarron goes down for Bama, or Manuel for FSU then we are both in serious trouble as well. Look what happened to FSU with all their injuries last year.

Can't make preseason predictions and account for injuries. Will they happen, of course...but to what extent and to whom.

My only issue with USC, is Kiffin. I don't think he will be the guy to lead them to an undefeated season. They will lose one of the two games against Oregon IMO. I believe it will be the PAC12CG, since they get the Ducks at home during the season.

That's why I don't think FSU will be there at the end. FSU has to go to Blacksburg and then play them again three weeks later in the ACCCG. It's extremely tough for a quality team to beat another quality team twice in the same year.

I don't get the love for FSU. What have they done to earn this respect? Weak schedule + highly ranked recruiting classes = national championship game appearance?

I mean they did beat ND last year unlike MSU

The same can be said for USF. I guess USF is going to play in the nation title game this year!

    Pretty weak burn, bro.

true but im confident we could win a few with trickett. he blew clemson up but we just kept getting stupid penalties and screwed ourselves. alabama can lean on their defense and run game to grind out wins. mccaron isnt that special to me. hes good but nothing amazing. what he does is manage the game well and make great decisions. im sure you can plug your second string guy in and win 90% of the games you play with that oline, runningbacks and defense

if USC has 5 injuries theyre down to 60 or so players. thats crazy thin depth and if its oline or dline thats even worse plus you have to account for the fact that they lost kalil. who is protecting barkley? left tackle is the most important position on offense, even more so than qb

Agree somewhat. This year is extremely important for USC. They need to win it all this season or it could be very tough over the next three to five years.

Sure, depth is going to become a big issue, especially in 2014 at the end of scholly reductions. USC will always have talent, but losing 30 scholarships will not be felt until the first year off probation.

Well, of course, I'm going to have to disagree. IMO, 2013 will be SC's toughest year during the sanctions, and it has absolutely nothing to do with roster numbers (SC had only 46 players on its travel squad last season, so roster numbers aren't really an issue). It's mainly because they'll be breaking in a new starting QB. Kiffin has handled the schollie reductions perfectly, and as a result, SC will never drop below the 75 player limit during these sanctions (this isn't a big deal either because during the past decade SC's roster averaged around 77 players per season). And to be honest, in 2014, with a veteran QB, and the players that signed the previous two recruiting cycles as well as the ones that are likely to sign this cycle, I expect SC to contend for one of the four playoff spots.

I have to agree that they have seemingly handled probation exceptionally well to this point. Unlike us, they didn't have struggles in recruiting with multiple coaching changes going IN to probation, so the recruits they have are very, very good. I remember being excited if ANY 4 star was interested in us. That said, you're going to have to be extremely fortunate for depth not to come into play. You lose any 3 of: Top Corner, Starting QB, Starting LT, Best DLineman in 2014 and it's going to go downhill. Not for lack of talent, but lack of experienced talent and depth in the tougher games.

  • Don't really wanna play Texas again, would rather play someone new in a BCS bowl. That said, I'll take whoever if it means we're in another BCS bowl, especially one we haven't been to yet.

Overall, his BCS projections border on outrageous.
