Playing Guitar

  • Anyone have any guitar experience. I have never played and I am kind of interested in trying it as a hobby. How hard would it be to teach myself?

Im thinking about just buying a cheap acoustic and giving it a shot.

  • That's exactly how I learned. It's not hard to teach yourself. Would help if you had someone else that knew how to also to show you some tricks. Just go to ultimateguitar.com and look up tabs to whatever song you want. YouTube is also fantastic for learning songs and techniques (hammer ons, pull offs, slides, bends, exc)

  • Pick out a couple of songs that you really like that would also qualify as beginner level and you will be able to stick with it.

Not sure what kind of music you are into but people have posted chord versions of most popular songs on the ultimate-guitar.com site mentioned above.

Youtube is also great for visual lessons

    Don't listen to him. . . . . . he'll have you playing with the guitar upside-down.

  • First, you have to know that everyone sucks at first, and you have to realize that you are gonna be awful for at least a couple months and that you wont be really any good for about a year. To be good at guitar you need to be patient and practice, practice and practice. Find easy songs that you like to play, and play them over and over. Play those songs with the music playing so you can develop a rhythm for time as well.

Best thing you can do to further yourself is play with someone who is better than you. If you have an extra 30 minutes to an hour each week I would highly recommend lessons for a beginner, if only for the first year. They will provide the basics and fundamentals that can help speed along the process and should be fairly good at explaining as this is what they do for income. Also, this is good because you wont learn to play the wrong way and you wont then have to alter your fundamentals later down the road.

Lastly, do NOT purchase an expensive first guitar. Go to a pawn shop or find a cheap deal. No reason to spend a bunch of money on something that you don't even know if you are going to like. It's not like you are going to playing for anyone in the near future. If its something you decide to dedicate your time to, then you can begin to dedicate your wallet.

  • Some tips:

-- practice consistently at first, every day. It's annoying, but have to develop those calluses. I first learned on an acoustic guitar where the strings were pretty far from the neck, so I felt like an electric guitar was easy as pie when I finally played one.

-- become familiar with the scales. As strange as it is, I never did much with them and so never really learned the scales that much, just learned the chords by rote memorization.

If you know the theory of music or another instrument, that would help. But I'd recommend not just memorizing Am7 or the various chords but understand what notes each chord consists of and what you change to get the variation on the base chords.

I taught myself but don't think I did it in the right way at all. So my advice is a TIFWIW, but there's a lot of resources out there. ultimate-guitar.com is a decent one, if only for tabs. Good luck.

What kind of music are you interested in?

This will help because there are different styles of playing that you will kind of get stuck in... you are better off making sure you start practicing on a style that you actually like...

fingerpicking, electric power chord / drop tuning kind of stuff, blues style, etc...

Justinguitar is a great site. Lots of good free stuff. I did it for about a year before I had a kid and now have zero time

    Practice practice practice

That's how I learned. I used to log in with my phone, plop my kids in the bath tub and strum whatever Justin told me to. I got time to practice and they didn't care what it sounded like because they just thought Dad playing the guitar was cool.

That's cool, great way to learn. What were some of the first songs you played?

i would be interested in doing country mostly. Casey Donahew Band, Brantley Gilbert, Eric Church, etc.

Thanks to everyone in this thread. I appreciate the help.

  • Which guitars are you looking at?

I agree with Anquan who said don't buy something expensive to start... BUT, I would say don't buy something completely low end either, because those guitars feel like sh*t and you won't want to keep playing on a clunker.

If you think you are gonna put effort into this, go to the store and play around with stuff in the 250-400 range.... ask the guy which ones have solid tops... play them and see what kind of string action (height of the strings) feels good to you. Check out the stiffness too...

I would advise against going really cheap because a really shi**y guitar can basically push you away from sticking with it.

My starter was some kind of Alvarez acoustic... probably 300 bucks... it's still fun to play now, it has a unique feel.

  • I went the ultimate guitar route first and it wasn't ideal. Justin guitar is the best free resource on the web IMO, and he does a great job breaking everything down. Learn some basic chords and techniques from him first then hit up tab sites to learn songs that are simple. I bought a 170 dollar acoustic electric guitar as my first one 5 years ago and I still enjoy playing it (I own a strat and les Paul studio now as well). Also, you will be very discouraged when you start, the key is perseverance.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't even really looked around much yet. This was just an idea I had the other day when I was just looking around at youtube videos, I came across some people covering songs and what not and I thought it would be a fun challenge to take on.

So, I wanted to find out if it was even possible to teach myself. I'm not interested in taking lessons and having set times to meet someone, I just want to be able to pick it up and practice whenever I have some time, as a student that is always changing depending on what papers are due or tests are coming up.

I think practicing guitar could be a little bit of a getaway from the stress of school. It will be really challenging, but I think I would enjoy it.

Take at least 15 minutes a day to practice. Don't worry about speed. Focus more on position. It's something that will always challenge your skills, no matter how well you play. Good luck

  • Practice until your fingers fu**ing hurt every day if you really like it.

George Harrison and Keith Richards used to say you better sleep with your guitar if you don't have a lady in your bed if you really want to get to know it.

  • Learn to love the pain in your fingertips. Once you get thick callouses, it's childsplay. Also, if you don't have any rhythm, you will make great sounds that seem to not know each other.
