Playing off of Westside's thread about this years top 4...

  • What would have been your selections for a four team playoff from this last season and why? My 4 would be (all records post conference championships)...

LSU (13-0 record - SEC Champions)

    Oregon (11-2 record - 2 wins over top 25 opponents - Pac 10 Champions)

Oklahoma St. (11-1 record - four wins over top 25 opponents - Big 12 Champions)

Bama (Homer pick because I honestly think they were one of the best 4 teams in the nation)
11-1 record - three wins over top 25 opponents - only loss to eventual SEC champions

If there was a wild card pick other than Bama, I would have to go with either Wisconsin (Big 10 Champions, 3 wins over top 25 opponents, only losses on the road to Michigan St. and Ohio State) or Stanford (11-1 record, only loss to eventual Pac 10 Champion, Oregon.

Just interested to see how everyone would have chosen their 4 team playoff. If you want, include your version of the semifinal games and results, along with the result of the championship game.

Some people disagreed with Bama making the NC game last year, but I think almost anyone would agree they should've been in a four team playoff.

I'd go the same as yours, but drop Oregon for Wisconsin.

Because Wisconsin was better than Oregon?

Just personal preference man. No need to get pissy. I just like the idea of seeing Montee Ball and Russell Wilson in that playoff.

And yes, I know Oregon beat Wisky by a TD.

Here is the major problem that still hasn't been solved.

Who are the top 25 teams that Bama beat?

Looking at there schedule, they really only beat 1 good team last year - Arkansas.

  • LSU
    OK ST.
    Oregon
    Wisconsin

I agree. Until that mystery is solved we can't award that crystal football to anybody. 'Tis truly a "major problem".

My 4 would have been - LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Oregon.

Understandable...Penn St and Florida were both ranked at the time we beat them (both away games). Us beating them did have something to do with their final rankings outside of the top 25. But looking at Bama's results, they really didn't have a "close win" against anyone that they played.

I think the fact that Alabama winded up playing in the NCG and won just goes to show that what we had wasn't really flawed. If Bama would have lost the NCG, eveyone would have their reason to believe that maybe Oklahoma St. should have been there instead. In hindsight, imagine if OSU would have gone undefeated and lost to LSU in the Championship game....Alabama (who showed they were the best team in the nation in the NCG) would have never had the chance to prove that they really were that good. At the end of the day, it just goes to show that any of the top 4-5 teams could beat each other on any given day. You just have to hope that you end up in the top two to get the chance (or now, the top 4).

Not saying Alabama didn't deserve to be in it, but just examining their schedule, the same issues are going to arise going forward. Opinions are going to based on a flawed rankings system that will make one team more deserving than the other. The coaches and AP poll will still play significant roles in creating public opinion and thus the top-4.

Yes Alabama beating them did have something to do with it, but at the same time, those teams should have never been ranked to begin with.

Florida was 6-6 in the regular season. 3 of those wins against UAB, Florida Atlantic and Furham shouldn't even be considered. Ole Miss was another win at 2-10. PSU barely beat anyone with a pulse too.

Until a standard schedule is require that requires all conference to play the same number of OOC and in conference games, the system will be completely flawed.

Agree, Hopefully in the next few years all conferences will go to a 9 game conference slate. It's embarassing how bad the slate of games in the SEC are the week before rivalry week.
