Position "U"

  • All time, I think SC might have a claim to be OL U. They've produced a shit load of All American/All Pro OL over the years.

USC, Michigan, and Wisconsin are the only schools I can think of. And I think that Wisconsin is more of a recent phenomenon, not all time. So it's down to USC and Michigan for OL U.

Penn State is LB U. They came up with the term, they get to use it. It's not a conditional thing that gets re-evaluated every couple of years.

Nah, we didn't come up with the term, the media coined the term.

About PSU though. They were the original LB U, and they still deserve to be so.

  • As much as i hate miami, they have a had a stupid amount of talent at RB and TE.

Prolly go with michigan/usc for ol. LSU for dl.

DB is tough (def not miami). Maybe

PSU, Bama and FSU have put a lot of talented LB's out there (derrick brooks, marvin jones, lawrence timmons, geno hayes and dakoda watson play for the bucs)

UF has put out a lot of recievers lately (Harvin, murphy, cooper, gonzalez) but i dont know about traditionally (and currently have no one)

  • If we are judging this by guys in NFL:
QB: USC is leader, followed by Purdue and Missouri. Stanford has strong history here too. Pac 12 is QB U conference with 13. Big Ten has 12, SEC and ACC have 11 each.

RB U is LSU. SEC has 25 Rbs, PAC 12 has 17 and ACC has 16.

WR: Ohio State (has 7 in NFL), Florida, miami and San Diego State have 6. Big Ten has 28, SEC has 27, and ACC has 24.

OL U: Miami and Texas have most NFL guys (8 each). BC, Iowa and Nebraska have 7 each. SEC and BigTen have 48 each, followed by ACC with 42.

DL U: USC. They have 9 in NFL. It could be FSU soon and FSU has pedigree here. Texas, UGA, LSU, Tennessee and UNC have 8 guys each in the NFL. SEC has 60 guys, ACC has 41, PAC 12 has 40.

LB: Bama is a strong one. Miami, Penn State and OSU are leaders right now. PSU wins it for now. ACC is best LB conference with 52. (SEC has 40, Big Ten has 43).

DB: I have no idea, but I would think SEC and ACC have most by conference.

That method is flawed, it weights a career backup the same as an NFL star and completely ignores the legends from a school.

  • I can appreciate why many would label Miami as Tight End U., especially with the amazing decade-long streak they had with Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow Jr. and Greg Olsen.

However, over the last 40 years, I don't think any school rivals my alma mater, Notre Dame.

1973: Dave Casper — College and Pro Football Hall of Fame, national champ, 2nd round pick.
1974-77: Ken MacAfee — Three-time All-American, Walter Camp Award winner, college Football Hall of Fame, national champ, 1st round pick.
    1981-82: Tony Hunter — All-American, 1st round pick.
    1983-84: Mark Bavaro — All-American, All-Pro, two-time Super Bowl champ
    1988-91: Derek Brown — All-American, 1st-round pick, national champ
    1989-92: Irv Smith — 1st-round pick
2003-05: Anthony Fasano, Mackey Award Finalist, 2nd round pick
2004-07: John Carlson, Mackey Award Finalist, 2nd round pick
2008-10: Kyle Rudolph, 2nd round pick (first TE selected after junior year)
2010-12: Tyler Eifert — First-team All-America, projected as Mackey Award winner and potential first-round pick.

This doesn't even include five players from the 1990s who also played in the NFL: Oscar McBride, Pete Chryplewicz, Jabari Holloway, Dan O'Leary and John Owens.

Well, this is the ESPN generation here: "Whatever happens this year is the best there has ever been at any point in history." So, you have to go by current NFL rosters.

I agree that the "current NFL players" method is flawed, but ESPN makes people not look past 5yrs of history. I hate ESPN, btw.

Michigan State has a solid enough list to be in the conversation for WR U.

Gene Washington Kirk Gibson, All-American Flanker playing 2 sports. Andre Rison Daryl Turner Mark Ingram Sr. Muhsin Muhammad Derrick Mason Courtney Hawkins Plaxico Burress Charles Rogers

New NFL guys Devin Thomas Mark Dell B.J. Cunningham Keyshawn Martin

    Edit: Good list

Historically, Miami (OH) probably has the edge, but since Hayden Fry started at Iowa in 1977, no one comes close to Iowa's coaching tree.
