Power Rankings of the SEC programs

We're talking about an entire decade.. Most likely ever single SEC team will have atleast one or more HC change. I think you just have to look at the school's ability to attract top coaches and recruit, plus recent history, to formulate a good list.

Bama/UF/LSU - All three are capable of recruiting at the highest level in the nation. All three are great jobs for prospective HC's. All three have the will and want to, to not allow medeocrity to more than a couple years. Anyone of these three could be at the top. Saban won't be around more than a few more years. He's already in his 60's. That said, after the terrible period Bama experienced after Stallings, Saban has righted that ship for a while. Still, they're one bad hire away from being set back a few years, just like any other top team. For UF, Zook set us back, despite winning eight games all three years he was at UF. I see Bama being able to make a big time hire after Saban. Maybe from his tree, maybe a top asst, which seems to be the route most elite teams are going these days with both college and the NFL.

I see UT and UGA differently. These teams boosters and admins have shown that they're OK with being OK. Richt has a cult like following amongst UGA boosters that is keeping them from reaching the potential that program has.

Petrino's buy out is ridiculous.. He should be at Arky for a good long while. He's doing a great job there, but they just can't attract the type of talent they need to win a title, not even with Bobby at the helm. If he went to a place like LSU/Bama/AU, wow.

USCe is definitely on the rise. The trends SOS is setting recruiting wise and culture wise could be built to last. The hire they make after SOS is going to determine if they're here to stay, or a flash in the pan. Make a good hire and they take that third spot in the east on a regular basis, and even better in some years when UF is down. It's so important for them to build on this winning culture they've developed. They must not slip back into their losing ways if they hope to be remembered within the next decade. Sos has proven that you can win there and made that job alot more attractive than it once was. If I'm a top asst, I'm going to USCe over UTenn as it is.

Don't see Miss State sustaining anything great. Mullen should move on soon. Ole Miss has some potential, but nothing great, especially on that side of the league. A&M has HUGE potential and Sumlin might be the guy for them. They could be sneaky once they get through the culture shock they're going to experience in the SEC. They have no idea what kind of defense they're about to see. The brand is so much different it'll take some time.

Bama/UF/LSU - Again, anyone of these teams are a great coach away. All three can and will recruit at an elite level more often than not. So long as there's a good coach and stability, there will be a chance to win titles.

UGA/AU - Both are great coaches away from being able to compete for titles. UGA could very easily be in the top group with an elite coach. Their instate talent is unreal and the loyalty in that state is more than that of FLorida kids. Not sure which direction AU is going with Gus gone and Leoffler as his replacement. They caught lightning with Cam. Not sure that can happen very often. They've certainly proven that at times, they can be as good as any.

Texas A&M/Arky (if Petrino sticks around)

    USCe

Tennessee - Modern football just isn't kind to them. The amount of exposure and money schools like UNC, USCe, Clemson get, keeps them from getting the top players out of those states like they used to. They also used to get top Georgia players that teams like Clemson, USCe, AU, Bama, UF, FSU, and of course, UGA are getting. They basically have to wait till those teams come through and get who they want. The instate talent there is getting better, but it's still not good at all. The fact that Dooley is an average recruiter is KILLING them. UT needs an elite recruiter as a HC to have any chance at the depth and calibur of player needed to compete for titles in the SEC.

    Missouri/Ole Miss - Similar upside
MSU - Mullen should leave soon. Potential to have nice little runs here and there, but not consistent top 15.
Vandy - Franklin is going nuts right now. If he commited to staying long term, they could move up. That said, it's Vandy.
    UK

    Great analysis.

The only point i disagree with is about Zook setting UF back. Y'all had a couple of down years, but Zook wa an elite recruiter who brought in tons of talent that urban used to win his first championship. Zook left more talent for urban than urban left for muschamp. But wm is bringing in talent and shouldn't have many excuses in the next couple years.

Now Mike Dubose was a true set back. Crappy coach, bad recruiter, and such a pus, he let boosters roam free. He is auburn's favorite church after pat dye

    1- LSU 2- UF 3- Arkansas 4- Georgia 5- Texas A&M 6- Tennessee 7- Alabama 8- Ole Miss 9- Auburn 10- Missouri 11- Vandy 12- Mississippi 13- Kentucky 14- South Carolina

    Something like that

I like where your head is at, although I would have Kentucky in the top 5 and Vanderbilt just behind Bama.

  • Arkansas is pretty high on these lists for never having won even an SEC championship.

Yeah somebody will always disagree, those are solid moves though

    I could see that

I was knocking Kentucky's overall game atmosphere perhaps a bit too much on second thought

I agree. Arkansas has a good program going and even though they are better than Auburn at the moment, Auburn is a much better overall program and has a higher ceiling that Arkansas has based on a better recruiting base.

Yea and I am not so much comparing them to Auburn but just in general. Petrino has never even won the SEC West. I would say Bama, LSU, UGA, UF would all be ahead of Arky and you could argue that Auburn might be ahead of them as well.

Not based on last years' results or what they will do next year, but based what they will do this decade.

    Bama
    LSU
    Florida
    Auburn
    Arkansas
    aTm
    USCe
    Mizzou
    UGA
    Tennessee
    Mississippi St
    Vandy
    Ole Miss
    Kentucky

    Msu should be higher

What does that have to do with being a consistent 10-win team ?

They have won 10 games or more 3 times since 1990.

They also have an elite coach for once. Arkansas is going to be mainstay in the top 4 of the SEC under Petrino.

We'll see. I still wouldn't put them ahead of Bama, LSU, UGA or UF.

I'd place them 4th, ahead of UGA. Dogs have been on the decline for 3 years.

  • I don't see Arky beating lsu and bama in the same season any time soon.

    The West is a gauntlet.

I agree..the thing with Georgia is that they haven't been able to keep pace and consistency with LSU and Bama, and before that, Florida. They seem just one step behind.
