Question for Arkansas guys RE: Your coach filing for bankruptcy

  • Surely some of the assistant coaches would be better as the HC than a washed up coach that just filed for bankruptcy?

    Surprised Arkansas hired this dude.

  • FWIW, he disclosed the information before he got hired.

  • So he disclosed it and they still hired him. That says a lot about the assistants I suppose?

  • Did he blow it all on bling and supporting a horde of baby mamas?

  • Bad real estate venture from what I read. Also, it makes more sense he took the money due to financial issues. Though its still low what he did to his Alma Mater.

It's a one-year hire to keep the staff and team together. That's it. Smith told our AD about it when he interviewed for the job. I think he was hired over the other assistants for one reason: if Smith has a good season, he still won't be retained.

Judging by your post count, I'd say that's fairly obvious.

  • I am not saying that is was a great hire, but what does this have to do with football?

Personally, I think in the long run, maybe not this year or the year after, this will be seen as the right thing to have done. I wish that Bama would have considered bringing someone back for a year when they hired Shula a couple of months before the season in 2003. Of course that may have not led to Saban being our coach now, but it still would have been a smarter move.

It is hard to find coaches in April and May regardless of the program, IMO. Even if it is a great job, which Arkansas is, it makes it extremely difficult on the HC to get a staff together for many reasons. The biggest issue here is going to be keeping the assistants focused on this year, and only this year, and not the rest of their careers.

  • And we are not talking about him being like 500k in debt....dude is like 25-50 million dollars in the hole.

That 1 year $800,000 contract won't even put a dent in it.

On another note...I can't remember the last time we lost to Arkansas. Or Tennessee for that matter.

You dont think rival coaches telling recruits parents that he is filing for bankruptcy is not an huge disadvantage? Along with the obvious label he has of being 1 and done at Arkansas.

Its hard to believe that promoting an assistant wouldn't have been much better (even if you plan on firing him after this year). No head coach wants to retain all of the assistants next year anyways, so that is a mute point.
