Question for Bama fans...

  • With the news that Sims was granted his waiver I was curious for some input on why he was not able to win the starting job at Bama. From what I've heard he seemed to have more talent than AJ but couldn't grasp the system well enough. The reason I ask is because he will be finding himself in a strikingly similar situation at UVA. No doubt he is the most talented QB on the roster but our incumbent starter is a very smart "system" QB who has had 2 years to grasp the system. My second question is that (for the most part) I have noticed an immense amount of support for Sims from Bama fans. I feel as if this is not typical of a player that leaves a school in a somewhat questionable situation and I must admit it's refreshing. Why does Sims seem to break the norm in this scenerio in y'all's opinion? Thanks in advance.

We liked Sims, but running a turnover free offense is more important in our system than being the most talented guy.

  • He struggled early on to find the throwing lanes. He is much more comfortable IMO rolling out of the pocket while in the shotgun. He forced the ball a lot too and that will get you benched in a hurry around here. INT's from bad throws will not work for Saban.

  • Can I be the first to say that he couldn't start at Bama because he's black?

j/k... Just always love the Aubs that truly believe that.

  • If Sims came in the same year as McCarron he wins the job.

Yeah, AJ had a HUGE advantage in the battle in that he had already been in the system a year and learned from the same type mistakes Sims made. Wish him well at UVA.

First of all, I am happy for him that he got the waiver, but I also don't like the idea of a kid getting a waiver nto to sit out just because he realized he wasn't going to get to be a starter.

Sims has the tools, although he made some really poor decisions in practice and in games against subpar talent.

Most of us are happy for him because he was a good kid that gave a lot of good effore while he was here and helped push AJ to become a better QB. Sims was a well-liked player and I think more than challenging him on the field, he helped force AJ to become a better leader. If Sims had not of thrown 2 picks in his first game, he may have gotten another look at the starting job, but as soon as that happened, the controversy was over.

I wish him the best and for him personally I am glad he got the waiver, but hope this doesn't start a trend of players being allowed to transfer and start the next year based off of playing time.

Not to hijack the thread but there aren't many UVA fans on this board. There is a really good story in the current SI on a walk-on player on UVA's team, Joseph Williams. Worth checking out.

Not even close, he had problems with lanes and other issues. Never threw much of the deep ball in the scrimmages just mainly check downs. I liked sims but in the end it was not translating to game speed

  • There is no evidence that Sims is more talented than AJ, who is very talented himself. Sims may have a slightly quicker release and be able to fling the ball better with a shorter throwing motion, but that's about it. He didn't win the job because AJ managed the game better (i.e. less turnovers), AJ is a team leader, and AJ has one more year in the system.

It seems that everyone wants to find some specific reason as to why Sims wasn't our qb. He wasn't going to be given the job, he had to earn it just like everyone else, and he didn't do it. Simple as that.

Sims isn't as talented as AJ McCarron. AJ does not get the appreciation he deserves. AJ was very good last year as a first year starter and a Sophomore. Sims just happened to show up when we finally got a really good QB in place. There is no chance he would have started over AJ at any point.

Also, the reasons or way he left the team were not questionable at all. We knew he was never going to play over AJ so we wished him well. This has been talked about for over a year. It was clear to most that McCarron was going to win the job and speculation over Sims future has always been talked about. Seems like a good kid and maybe he will get his chances at UVA.

  • I think Sims is as talented as AJ, but AJ just made better decisions and fewer mistakes. Alabama fans support SIms because he did things the right way. He went in and competed hard and never complained about it. He just kept working hard. After AJ led Bama to a national title, the only way he could win the starting job was if AJ were to get injured. So he decided that he didn't want to spend his remaining years sitting on the bench and would like to go home to Virginia. I hope that UVA wins the ACC and SIms goes onto greatness.
