  • Play the fade. Usually when I try to play my slice I end up hitting it straight.

I love to golf but have no idea how to make the ball draw or fade on purpose or get back spin.

  • My advise (from a bad to avg golfer)

Leave the driver in the bag. Tee off with a 3wood and low irons/hybrids when possible.

Hit it straight 210 to 240 off the Tee is really all you need unless you are a low handicapper.

I took the driver completely out of the bag and it improved my game greatly, but I am a high handicapper and my one strength is hitting a long iron approach.

  • At address keep your hands the same. Slightly turn your right forearm outward (to the right).

This is assuming you are right-handed.

    This.

I hit a 3 or 5 wood on a every par 4 and 5. I can hit my 3 wood about 250-260 right down the middle of the fairway. Thats more then enough. Especially if your hitting fairways.

you can hit a fade swinging inside - out... its a matter of closing the face at impact.

  • Most average golfers have no business ever owning a driver. Though, I fall in line I'll hit the damn thing 12+ times every round.

I play very little, but do hit driver. If the hole doesn't call for driver, I step down to 3 iron. I quit hitting fairway woods, and hit a maximum of 3 iron out of the fairway. Anytime I am off the green, but no more than 10 or 15 feet, I hit a 7 iron, unless pin placement makes it impossible, or I have to hit over something. Played 2 weeks ago for the first time in a year, and shot a 94. Since I play little, the fewer clubs I hit, the better.

  • Without seeing your swing I can only guess as to why you're slicing. Could be a multitude of things, grip, stance, club off plane, not releasing the wrists, not getting enough rotation, too much backswing, too hard of grip.

To give accurate tips on how to fix it, you really need to see the swing. If you can, put up a video and I will be able to tell exactly what you're doing wrong.

If it's a grip issue, it doesn't matter whether it's "at contact". The grip doesn't change.

Do you mean that it's an issue of hand placement at contact? Or is the problem with un-hinging your wrists or closing the face or timing your hip/shoulder rotation or... etc etc.

There are too many things to try to fix this online.

I think its just my wrist or maybe ball placement. I love golf, but so much damn stuff goes into it

Yep. If the ball is just slightly too far back in your stance, you might not be able to get the club face square in time. If you don't get the club face square in time, the ball will fade/slice.

It could be as simple as strengthening your grip. This doesn't mean gripping it tighter, it means the way you position your hands. Try rolling your right hand more to the left (around the club). Don't move it to the right, as someone else mentioned - that will weaken your grip and make you slice it even harder.

    AbsenteeTrojan

  • Move your left hand to where its on top of your club. Assuming you are right handed here.

Its uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it. My wrist actually hurt for a couple days after switching grips. Also, pay attention to your hips, and make sure they are closing with your swing and not staying open. Keeping your hips open make you push the ball, obviously.

This video will show you what to do with your left hand. After I made this small change I completely lost my fade, and started hitting draws. I play my draw because it gets you more distance.

  • You have to remember that it's not always the left hand that's the problem though - if his right hand is too weak then he'll still slice the ball. Or if he has a strong left and a weak right who knows what could happen, lol.

Good link though. I'll show it to my fiancee who just started learning.

I went and took a lesson because my slice was so awful. I actually feared hitting off a tee because I could not hit the fairway to save my life.

He moved my left hand to the top of the club, put my right hand so that my left thumb fit perfectly in my right palm, and I started hitting the ball perfectly straight. He said my hip movement was fine, as well as my stance and ball placement. It was only my grip causing the problem.

Its crazy how something that small can make such a huge difference. I'm at the point now, if I hit a fade I just stand there wondering how the hell I just did that.

I hear you. I actually play a slight fade, but don't want to correct it. My natural swing is a fade swing. In the past, I've switched my swing so that I had a natural draw, but this didn't help my score. How can I put this so that it makes sense... with a slight fade, it is more rare for me to hit a slice when compared to playing a slight draw and hitting a hook. The fade is more controllable for me.

And yes, I know I probably lose about 5-10 yards per drive with a fade, but I'm safely in the fairway, lol.
