Rams Redskins strike deal for No 2 pick

  • Have not read thread but will reiterate what I stated on BOL when the trade was announced:

-NFL Climate is completely different now that there is a Rookie Wage Scale. There is a "Trade Value" Card that assigns value points to each draft slot with earlier picks being of greater value and the interval/difference between each pick not being the same.

The aforementioned "Trade Value" Cards have changed with the implementation of the Rookie Wage Scale as teams are now more apt to trade up for a high pick because they are no longer concerned about the Salary Cap hit they will take if the high pick turns out to be a bust. Being that the risk for a team trading up is now mitigated by the Rookie Wage Scale, teams are now required to provide more compensation to move up to the top of the draft.

    Example:

Pre- Rookie Wage Scale (Hypothetical Numbers to illustrate point)
    Round 1, Pick 1= 3000 Points
    Round 1, Pick 5= 2350 Points
    Round 2, Pick 5= 500 Points
    Round 3, Pick 5= 150 Points

    Post Rookie Wage Scale
    Round 1, Pick 1= 3500 Points
    Round 1, Pick 5= 2500 Points
Round 1 (2013 Future Pick- Slot TBD)=750 Points
    Round 2, Pick 5= 250 Points

This was a good trade for the Redskins. In fact the Browns wanted the chance to exceed what the Redskins offered but the Rams had already agreed to the deal. With so little money now tied into Rookies......there is a lot more Salary Cap Space to sign Free Agents. Again, good trade by the Redskins as RGIII is a potential Difference Maker....and you have to have an ELITE QB to win in today's NFL.

Jabrill Peppers...More I watch, the more I'm convinced he is the best player in the 2014 class. Barring injury, he will do special things.

  • its only a great trade if he becomes an elite QB and you dont know that he will up front ; will he be a Peyton Manning or that QB that was drafted with the second pick ....whats his name and how much money did they pay the kid

  • Solid post about the points adjustment. That was something I had realized after the wage scale was implemented, but I haven't seen anybody address it.

  • One more thing about the money freed up due to the Rookie Wage Scale. As aforementioned, this [Rookie Wage Scale] allows teams to be more active in the Free Agent Market.

If I were a team GM, I'd sign Randy Moss to a League Minimum Base Contract full of performance incentives.....with a medium level performance clause that automatically renews the contract another 1 year if these medium performance thresholds are met. I'd rather have Randy Moss [based on what I've heard about his workout with the Saints] signed to such a contract for 1 possibly 2-3 years than drafting the top WR in the 2012 Draft, Justin Blackmon as Moss is a proven player in the NFL and such a contract would motivate him to play hard. Contract for Moss would have some clause about blocking and running routes and not taking plays off.

Again, with the Rookie Wage Scale, teams can be extremely competitive in the Free Agent Market. This allows teams to sign veterans that are proven performers to incentive-laden contracts. Given the "transition" that is taking place in the NFL......Free Agency will be just as important if not more so than the draft in building a Super Bowl Contender in the future.

Mitigated by Salary Cap Space [due to Rookie Wage Scale]. See my previous post about signing Free Agents to Incentive Laden Contracts to replace draft picks given up.

Look at the Free Agents currently on the Market......Some good players available to be signed to incentive laden contracts. Depending on Signing Bonus [which is prorated over the length of the contract and a portion can be recouped for Salary Cap purposes if player is cut before contract expires] and Contract Terms......these contracts could occupy very little Salary Cap Space.

That's one of the biggest things people are forgetting. Granted the Skins gave up future first round picks, but this affects them in FA now. They didn't splurge in FA last year, as they have in the past, which sets them up with a nice 40 mil+ to spend on proven players. We saw what Cam did for Smith in Car last year, I'd assume that pitch with RGIII would be an easier selling point vs Grossman/Beck.

    Not 40 million anymore.

Plus those "proven" players the Skins have signed in the past have worked out real good for them.
