  • Top 25 is a mighty big list to compile... I'll go Top 10 off the top of my head assuming you mean active coaches:

    1. Nick Saban
    2. Urban Meyer
    3. Chip Kelly
    4. Brian Kelly
    5. Kevin Sumlin
    6. Les Miles
    7. Chris Peterson
    8. Gary Patterson
    9. Bob Stoops
    10. Brady Hoke

  • ALL college football? Or just D1A? Because that one guy at the Colorado School of Mines is a good one.

Don't think I could come up with an entire 25, so I won't try. But one thing I've found in discussions of both college and NFL prospects, the best way to do a ranking is not a 1234 numeric list, but in tiers.

I know you're just trolling, but no. There's a number of good coaches outside the SEC that come way before some or most of the SEC coaches.

    Yup.

Tier 1: Saban, Urban Meyer, Chris Peterson (really wish he would leave Boise so we could see how good he truly is)
Tier 2: Chip Kelly, Brian Kelly, Bob Stoops, Gary Patterson, Spurrier
Tier 3: Les Miles, Petrino, Mike Riley, Sumlin
Tier 4: Hoke, D'antonio, Charlie Strong, Mark Richt, Muschamp

  • I won't nitpick people's lists since I'm not providing my own, but I have to throw in my support for Bill O'Brien. If there's a coach in the nation who did more with less, I didn't see it.

The early losses hurt, but he certainly improved as a first-time HC during the year.

It's hard to tell based off of one season, but he has done nothing short of amazing. I'm glad to see PSU have a coach like him. He makes the situation much less painful.

Pretty good here. I would have Spurrier at around 10 though. Guy has done a ton with a program that was not good at all. He aslo did a ton at UF much more so than Muschamp will IMO. Muschamp will be a good one though just not to Spurrier's level while he was there.

  • Glad to see Mike Riley getting some respect. Very good coach for what he has to work with. He is very easy to overlook.

  • Tier 1 - Championship winners
    - Nick Saban
    - Urban Meyer
    - Les Miles
    - Bob Stoops
    - Steve Spurrier

    Tier 2 - Program Consistency/ Conference Champions
    - Chip Kelly
    - Brian Kelly
    - Mark Richt
    - Chris Petersen
    - Gary Patterson
    - Frank Beamer
    - Bill Synder
    - Bobby Petrino

Tier 3 - Up and Comers
    - Will Muschamp
    - Kevin Sumlin
    - Brady Hoke
    - Jimbo Fisher
    - David Shaw
    - Charlie Strong
    - Jim Mora Jr

Tier 4 - Good but not always consistent
    - Mike Gundy
    - Mike Riley
    - Bo Pelini
    - Dabo Sweeney
    - Lane Kiffin
    - Mike Leach
    - Rich Rodriguez
    - Tommy Tuberville

Say what you want about Petrino, but he did pretty good at Louisville and Arkansas, had teams in BCS bowls so I put him in the tier 2 group. Bobby has proven he can win, its his off the field issues that tarnish peoples view of him.

this AND putting Muschamp in the same list as Spurrier is an insult to college football. Let the man be a head coach for more than a few years and then we'll evaluate him.

  • Any thoughts on Golden, just curious. Also Bill Snyder should be in the top tier

Steve Spurrier top tier is laughable - good coach , but has gone down hill since his title at UF. Second Tier IMO

    Overall 207–77–2 (.727) (NCAA)
    USCe - 65-37
    12–20 (.375) (NFL)
    35–21 (.625) (USFL)
    Bowls 8–10 (.444)

He's had back to back solid seasons at South Carolina and he won 6 SEC conference championships and a national championship which is why i put him in tier 1.
