Rank these Four coaches. Woody, Bo, Carr, Tress

True. But longevity counts. Link below to a good comparison that examines from a number of angles. Remember they all have flaws.

Joe top for longevity (15-20 yrs count), Bowl Wins / Percentage.
Had 5 Undefeated seasons and consistently graduated 80-85% of his players.

    Winning Percentage:
    1. Tressel, 2. Bo, 3. Hayes, 4. Carr, 5. Paterno.

    Bowl Record:
    Paterno 24-12-1
    Michigan all time 20-21
    OSU all time 19-23

    National Champs
    Hayes 5
    Paterno 2 (4 claimed, 5 undef. seasons 68, 69, 73, 86, 94)
    Carr 1
    Tressell 1 (Plus YSU)
    Bo Zero

    My Ranking
Paterno (winning, graduation, longevity, bowls, 5 Undef seasons),
    Hayes (5x Nat'l champ),
Tressel (Winner at OSU and YSU),
Carr ('97: best UM team in my memory),
    Bo (never won a NC)

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1034100-joe-paterno-dies-how-will-the-legend-stack-up-against-other-big-ten-greats

You do realize that until the mid 70's the Big Ten would only allow the winner to go to a bowl game right? The would add 3 to Bo and I'm sure atleast 10 to Woody. I'll give you longevity though.

What do they have in common?

All have way fewer victories than Joe Paterno.

The only memories I have of Joe are losing 9 straight to Carr.

I didn't know that only the Big Ten winner would go to a bowl game. Presumably the sub .500 winning percentage is going to a tough game in the Rose Bowl? The OSU/UM bowl records were all time in the program, Joe's were under his time alone.

Bo & Woody were critical to establishing what the core culture of their programs - no doubt they were awesome.

Bo: in the end never won a NC, never went undefeated & untied. On his wiki page, looks like he didn't go to bowl games 4 years if B1G rules were different. BUT - between '69 - ' he did go to 7 bowl games - and lost ALL OF THEM! For his career he was 5 - 12 in bowl games.

Hayes: 5 NCs, high winning percentage, 6-6 all time in bowls. 2 Undefeated seasons. Looks like Woody missed out on 17 years of bowl games! Woody is close for longevity & winning. 5 NCs is great, 2 Undefeated, Untied seasons vs Paterno's 5 Undef/Untied, 24-13 bowl record, and high GSR puts him at the top.

Woody was better than Bo in record, but they were both critical to defining who those programs are today.

Tressel & Carr raised both programs to a higher national profile than their predecessors.

I still say Joe's tops on all of them then...

    Hayes, Tressel, Carr, Bo

Yeah - he did. No doubt. I struggled with that too. I think that Carr was awesome - he attracted elite talent. Michigan should not have fired him.

The 35 years that Joe coached prior to Carr coming to Michigan that puts him higher in my mind.
I placed Carr below Tressel because of head to head, and above Bo because of undefeated seasons, National Champs, and 6-7 bowl record.

They're all pretty good. Not saying that they're not.

How many coaches can we fit into those categories? And really, can't you hold off on the POS stuff? It's vulgar, and aren't you a mod?

Only mods on tBB are Aussie, Old Oaken, MarineMountie, Mike, Tusks, and myself.

Also I don't have much to add to this topic. I don't know enough about them to rank them just wanted to see where others thought they were.

  • Fwiw I'll go ahead and rank them.

    1. Woody
    2. Bo
    3. Tress
    4. Carr
Ohio State and Michigan were always national powers before both Woody and Bo but both programs prior to the hires had fell on hard times. Joe made Penn St., Woody and Bo resurrected programs back to prominence. I might hate Michigan with a passion but I respect them. I can't say the same for a few other programs in the Big Ten. Don't get me wrong...I've never nor will I ever cheer for them but without Michigan there is no Ohio State and vice versa.

As a Michigan fan, just switch 1 and 2 and it's fine. OSU fans put Woody Hayes first, UM fans put Bo first, go figure. Tressel dominated Carr, so he's ahead on any list, but they were all great coaches.

And for the 60 year old OP, so far it looks like epic fail on your troll attempt. How does looking up at UM for 60 years feel? Must be pretty bad to be on a message board trolling after hours like a little kid. Excellent way to put your multiple degreeslol to use. Why didn't you put any of msu's 6 coaches in there? Where would Williams, or Smith, or Dantonio rank? 5 and below, that's where. But you will come back with Saban, and I'll laugh at you seeing as he bailed on that program the first chance he could, and took nice parting shots as he left.

Wow there's a lot o anger in this post. 4 epic coaches being ranked and your skin is that thin.

Sorry you are that angry. Will I be able to start any thread that pleases you? There's a reason you must be this angry, but only you really know. Btw, I'm 50 and have suffered MSU football new than I've enjoyed it. I've been around for two NC seasons and have enjoyed the rebuild that Dantonio has done, but that'll just probably make you more angry.

No anger here man. Just get really tired of trolls that 'claim' a lot of things, only to get caught up in their own lies. If you truly are 50, I don't even feel sorry for you, because there is no help for you. And you must have really enjoyed those msu natty's as you sat in your soiled diaper. If you really are that age, and have children, you are one sorry individual. I can't imagine how your children are turning out. Multiple degrees, suuuuuuuuure ya do little fella.

1/2 is still better than the zero for Bo - even using your rule that only AP or Coaches poll NC's count. Which by the way means Michigan has 1 & 1/2 NC's total in their history. Congrats.
