Put Out the Welcome Mat for LSU

    Published: 12/26/2012 10:37 AM Last Modified: 12/26/2012 10:37 AM

The Big 12 got an advocate for expansion in Wednesday’s Baton Rouge Advocate. Scott Rabalais, a sports writer for The Advocate, wrote a story with five reasons why LSU should move to the Big 12 Conference. The Big 12 has repeatedly said it is not interested in expansion unless the additions bring something to the league. LSU brings more than enough. Pair the Tigers with Arkansas or Florida State to get the league to 12 members and let’s go. Rabalais’ five reasons to move include: unfair football scheduling by the SEC, permanent opponent scheduling by the SEC, Alabama’s long shadow (sound familiar to Texas in the Big 12?), timing is everything (realignment is all the rage) and geography is overrated (see West Virginia). Before Arkansas joined the SEC, LSU was long the westernmost member in that league. If the Tigers were in the Big 12, they would be the southernmost member. Big deal. Baton Rouge isn’t nearly as far as Morgantown. At least Baton Rouge is in the same time zone. LSU, along with Arkansas, are exactly the the kind of schools the Big 12 should be courting. Both make far more sense geographically than any other possibilities now being rumored (Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Miami). The Big 12 may have no shot at LSU or Arkansas but that doesn’t mean someone shouldn’t at least give them a call.

  • Arkansas should have never joined the SEC simply based on geography. They should have stayed in the SWC and then joined the Big 12. They have experienced more success than SCar (who also joined in '92) but that doesn't justify joining the SEC from a football perspective.

You probably want Arkansas to leave. They kicked Aggy's ass in the SWC, too. Once again congrats on snapping that losing streak this season. Manziel is a baller.

Actually I am indifferent to whether Arkansas is here or not. They aren't a threat no matter which conference they reside in.

Bielema is putting together one hell of a staff. Lots of Florida connections, but I wish they would concentrate more on Texas, specifically the Dallas area.

Btw I picked up on the hidden smack talk in your post. I'm a wizard.

  • The writer overstates LSU's worth. I'd take Arkansas over LSU any day because of the past rivalries. Funny to see the A&M swagger at the end of a season. No matter how bad they are they are always worldbeaters in preseason and after the creampuff games. Loud bragging and swagger that quickly falls away. Good to see a successful year at last. At least 30 teams have finished in the Top 5 since A&M's magical 1956 season. Could this be the year for lighting to strike?

Maybe so but playing A&M ten times a season is a lot better than playing Bama, Florida, UGA, and A&M ... While Bama plays ... wait for it Kentucky and Tennessee.

Imo he was just bringing to light the major discrepancy in how SEC teams should be viewed. It is ironic that in two bridge scheduling seasons that have no influence on future scheduling that LSU plays what is considered the hardest schedule in the West while Bama plays the easiest. It is what is but it doesn't make it less true because people say its whining.

Really? I believe LSU has more wins than any program since 2000 and is easily viewed as a TOP 4 program of the new millenium in football. The only people that care about old rivalries are the ones who have nothing to play for right now.

Texas A&M is cognitive dissonance at its finest. In reality, they are a cult-like school with a mediocre football record. They refuse to believe this though. So they seek any type of justification to prove the sense of greatness that exists only in their minds. It only takes one victory over Arkansas to establish them as one of the powerhouses of the SEC West. Never mind that you have beaten them like a drum throughout your history. Never mind that your football program has achieved far more than A&M will likely ever achieve. Apart from one golden decade in the 80s/90s when A&M was cheating full out, they have never accomplished much. They rationalize the utter dominance that Texas has shown in the series by saying that that was because they once were a all-male military school. All of their top-five finishes and their single national championship happened when they were in all-male military school, but don't worry about that. They would rather look at an arbitrary time period that covers their cheating decade and a period of extended Texas malaise. Ergo, a winning record! Unfortunately their win loss record against Texas Tech in that same time period favors Tech. Ditto for all of the top half of the Big 12.

Enjoy them for what they are. Soon they will lapse into mediocrity. Then you can watch the ebb and flow of Aggie misery. Puffed up with pride followed by extreme agony. Their highs are higher than yours and their lows are lower. #AggyTears. They are addictive.
