Good for you. I'm assuming you didn't take out any student loans.

Now, you've presumably made enough money that you're going to be putting your daughters through school, right?

Nope, paid for it up front.

    We will do our best.

Again, good for you, and your daughters are very lucky to have a parent who can help them out. Unfortunately, your daughters are in the minority in the U.S. now. Do you think it's unfair to hand out tuition payments to your daughters?

Funny, I don't think I've ever seen you post in political threads on this board before. If you ever even looked at tBB political threads, you'd know my reputation. Even the people who disagree with my political views concede that I know my stuff.

That being said - you have yet to provide a single source to justify any of your ridiculous beliefs. You have yet to detail a post with any sort of support behind it besides your own personal beliefs. You have provided no evidence or verification for any of the things you've said. You've failed at the most basic steps of intellectual debate, and you've given no indication that you're capable of succeeding in that area.

Oh, so Obama didn't double the amount of able-bodied adults using food stamps from 2008-2010 and essentially gut many of the requirements your man, Bill, implemented back in the 90s?

Just an example of nothing but my ridiculous beliefs.. Maybe we should touch on the astronomical spending next.

You can tell your daughters whatever you want, I'm not trying to parent them.

I just think it's a little silly that you can't recognize the decided advantage that your daughters will have over other children just by virtue of having a parent able to pay for even a part of their college education.

So it is unfair to other children that he worked hard to provide for his family? Isn't that a father's role?? The only thing unfair is the ability to reproduce by anyone who wouldn't do everything in their ability to provide for their children.

    From the USDA:

2008: 28.2 million participants received an average benefit of $102 per month for a total cost of $37.6 billion.
2009: 33.5 million participants received an average benefit of $125 per month for a total cost of $53.6 billion.
2010: 40.3 million participants received an average benefit of $134 per month for a total cost of $68.2 billion.

Facts are not beliefs, spending is out of control and this is a great example of why.

Well, it's always been my opinion that the only barrier to higher education should be merit. Hard work, intelligence, drive, etc. But I'm very against the idea that there is some financial barrier to it because that turns it into something elitist. But that's just my opinion.

Is there an end to the help one gets if there is a financial barrier?

My question is the similar for many topics. Where does this help end? Who gets it? Who decides? How much is enough? How much is too much? I don't know the answers.

Well, a good place to start (we'll stick with education for now) is look at who needs it the most. If you decide what qualifies a student to come to your university (grades, extracurriculars, essays, letters of recommendation, etc. – hard work and merit) then you have a pool of all of the potential students. Then, find out which students who have already met your qualifications need the most assistance in regards to finances. That could be square one for this discussion.

  • I have been thinking about this today and I think it is best to look at the election results in pragmatic way. I think it is important to try and understand HOW President Obama won the election – and WHY he won the election. For me these are two different questions with two distinctly different answers.
So, HOW did Obama defeat Romney?
For me Obama basically ran using the following strategy: “If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from. You make a big election about small things.” Obama did this, and he did a FANTASTIC JOB.
Step One: Make the election about Romney.
I know you were not there (in Ohio for example) but starting very early in the spring Obama starting run ads against Romney. TONS OF THEM EVERYDAY. There was Bain Capital. There was Not paying Taxes. There was one where they accused Romney for being responsible for a woman’s death – practically called him a murderer. There was huge tax increases for the middle class to pay for tax breaks for the rich. Only cares about rich people. ETC ETC This went on and on for so long. And there was not a response from Romney because he had not officially been nominated yet (convention). This really hurt Romney a lot.
On top of this Obama was able to present himself as someone who cares and understands etc. Almost like the old Bill Clinton Line: I feel your pain. And it helped change the contest from Obama vs. Romney to Romney vs. Obama and Us.
Step Two: Make a big election about small things:
Women were going to lose their “reproductive rights” Heck, I am not even sure what this means (-: It was about Abortion It was about birth control. The war on women. Vote like your lady parts depend on it It was about Romney having his dog crated on the car roof. It was about Ann Romney having a horse as part of her therapy for MS. It was about Romney being rich and not caring. It was about Big Bird, IT was about Romnesia. It was about Binders full of Women And yes Bin Laden is Dead and Al Qaeda is on the run (heck he must have shot him) Also on and on and on. Obama never had to talk about his record or his policy / plans for the future. And he did a great job at this too.
    So, look at the results:
Women make up about 55% of the electorate and they voted for Obama by 12% more than Romney. Single women are about 30% of this group – and about 70% of them voted for Romney. So, the war on women worked!!
Latino’s voted for Obama about 73% to 27%. Huge number. Why?? Well remember earlier this year Obama granted amnesty (no deportation) to all young illegals.
Blacks voted for Obama 94% to 6%. Did not matter that unemployment of Blacks is about double that of the rest of the Country and is a lot worse than when he took office. Also, in some States even higher percentage of blacks voted this year vs. 2008. For example, in Ohio if the number of Blacks voting this year was the same as in 2008 – then Romney would have won Ohio.
Something like 65% of all people voting reported that they thought Obama could best relate to them and their problems – even though 55% agreed Romney was best suited to fix the economy and create jobs. So – war on Romney was very effective.
Lastly – and this really makes me alittle upset:
Romney received about 3 million votes LESS than what John McCain got in 2008!!! Or said another way – John McCain would have defeated Obama this year. To me this is just unimaginable – that people would not come out and vote even knowing what was at stake.

-- So now onto WHY do I think Obama won:
Probably first is Country’s Demographics and how this has been used to create a strong coalition for Obama:
    Higher percentage of Blacks voting – almost all for Obama;
Latino population is the fastest growing in the US – and will difficult to win if you lose 75% of this vote. And yes, Obama did grant amnesty for the younger illegals – but he really did not do anything to address illegal immigration policy. Absolutely nothing. Why? Because he NEEDED this to be a campaign issue for this election – because he knew this was an issue that he would win. Notice how Romney did not touch this either.
So, the Country is slowly but surely getting Browner – and the voting electorate for sure is reflecting that and for now is a strong combined group
Women voters remain 55% of the total – but a higher % are single and are single mothers. For example, 40% of all babies in the US are now born to single mothers. So this is a newer Demographic that Obama exploited both with Obama Care but also in the War on Women Campaign
Young people voted in large numbers again – and actually Obama got a lower % this time vs. 2008. But he still wins a large majority. Like in Ohio – Romney got crushed in Franklin County (Columbus) – thank you OSU!!
I think the auto bail out campaign in Ohio was extremely effective. Way back in 2008 /9 when the Government took over GM – GM was directed to not allow jobs to leave OHIO and / or to move other auto jobs into Ohio. This was done way back then knowing that OHIO would be crucial for the re-election this year. But in general a lot of this bailout money as well as a lot of the 1 trillion stimulus bill money went directly or in-directly to unions – and this also makes for a consistent voting block.
And also – do not forget the “47%” Not sure how much this quote hurt Romney – but for sure did not help. But the truth is now over 50% of the population now receives some sort of financial assistance every month from the Government. So we have in fact now gone past the tipping point – there are now more people in the wagon than outside the wagon pushing and pulling. This also is a new voting Demographic that need to be addressed.
Also, people this year voted on how they feel – and not on the facts. Majority agree the Economy is the number one issue, and most agree Romney is best to fix it. But did not matter, 65% say Obama better understands them – and this is a make me feel good vote instead of a do good for me vote. Heart instead of Head.
So the WHY he won is the long term planning and building of this strong coalition of voters who came out in huge numbers to vote – and this coalition is built and based on these new Voting Demographics in the Country.
So, I do not think Conservatives need to compromise their principles, but they do need to address the outages with these new demographics. They need to relate to them in a way they can understand. It needs to be a conversation – and not just a lecture. This conversation needs to about how Conservative principles can help these various individuals achieve their dreams or aspirations. For example, wouldn’t it have been very powerful if during the second Debate (the town hall format) if at the very beginning Romney would have walked up to the first questioner and asked him what his dream job would be if could have it? And talk about how he was going to help that person get his dream job. Or he could ask the young mother what she was most afraid of or fearful of for her child’s future – or what her dreams are for her child – and go on to explain how he could help her achieve that dream. I think it would be very powerful.

Despite the Obama win and the transitioning demographics of the voting public, i do not think all is lost. Look at the results in the big swing states -- really only 1 % wins for Obama in Ohio, Virginia, FL. In that regard maybe the closest election ever. And in the house of Rep. the Conservatives actually gained 2 seats. So after what most people would agree was probably the most negative, nasty, PERSONAL campaign ever run by a Presidential candidate, Obama just barely squeaked out his victory. So for sure the challenges and outages need to be address - but I think with the right candidate and the right approach elections in the future can be won.

Okay, sorry for the novel. Just trying to stir things up a bit... biggrinfishing

I don't know what world you live in, but in the real world, with real mathematics, 28.2 times 2 does not equal 40.3, so Obama most certainly did not "double the amount of able-bodied adults using food stamps from 2008-2010."

Would you like to try again?

What are your thoughts on, say, a very smart individual who comes from a poor family that has the drive and aspirations to become a rocket scientists (first thing I could think of). So this individual works hard in school and manages to get accepted into MIT. Now, even if this student works a near full-time job while in school, they'll come up pretty short on the tuition. Are you supportive of scholarships and/or financial aid to help this person get into a great school, one they've worked hard for and are deserving to get into, or do you think there is a financial barrier to higher education?

Aren't there academic scholarships. Wouldn't this "rocket scientist" qualify.

All the time. Can't say that I haven't laughed in derision at every one of your posts though.

I'll try to explain this in words that you can understand.

Let's say there are two people. Both people have to spend 4 years in a place and pay $100,000 for the privilege. Person 1 is given $100,000 before going to this place. Person 2 is given nothing and has to borrow $100,000 to pay the fee.

Both people graduate and get jobs earning $50,000/year. Person 1 has no debt, and thus earns pure profit on their salary. Person 2 has $100,000 debt, and must not only pay back the balance of their loan, but must pay interest on their loans, therefore netting considerably less than Person 1.

Is it really so difficult to understand how xxmgobluexx's daughters have an advantage over other students by virtue of their father paying for their education?

EDIT: "netting" is a more appropriate word than "earning."

"Regardless of circumstance a leech is a leech. I don't want your respect nor do I even value it. The crap I flush down the toilet sits higher on the bar than you liberals do.

Thank you for supporting a racist and communist president. I hope Detroit crashes and burns and then unions along with it. A comment from a former friend related to the election:

"Regardless of circumstance a leech is a leech. I don't want your respect nor do I even value it. The crap I flush down the toilet sits higher on the bar than you liberals do.

Thank you for supporting a racist and communist president. I hope Detroit crashes and burns and then unions along with it. F&%$ you, you are no friend to me and I lost all respect for you the moment you supported that s&*^ bag president. I sincerely hope you go bankrupt and student loans force you into a below poverty line life - because hey! that's the type of lifestyle you voted for it."
