Return of the Center position (NBA)

  • Man, some talent is about to flood the NBA here.

2012 draft has Andre Drummond and others discussed in the link and then the 2013 draft has two ELITE prospects in Cody Zeller and Steven Adams. Gonna be a great position in 3 years.

    In the NBA you have:

Elite: Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, Amar'e

Really Good: Marc Gasol, Brook Lopez

About to move up: Ibaka, Deandre Jordan, any others?

Elite: Howard, Maybe Bynum.. Pau is laughable.. Amar'e is even more laughable.

Deandre Jordan is pretty solid defensively and has no game offensively.

    Ibaka is a PF.

  • I knew listing current players would be a down fall. Focus on the draft. Drummond has unreal potential.

    fsufsu

  • Bynum is elite only when he tries or cares to be. Otherwise he is average at best.

I have noticed you are big fan of potential. If Drummond didnt have serious question marks hed be a lock for top 2. People are pretty worried about his motor. Wouldnt be so quick to count on him to become an upper echelon player. I like him, but hes a boom or bust guy

  • Is this Noels kid supposed to be a center next year or more of a power forward? Supposed to be a great shot blocker

I am. Been following Drummond for 4 years and he's a freak. His measurements at the combine were otherworldly. Unless he totally quits he'll be a bigger Deandre Jordan. I really think his floor is as a 12-9-2blks type guy.

He's like 6'11 275 of muscle running a 4.6 according to most. Jeremy Lamb has said he won their team sprints most of the time.

PF, carbon copy of Davis. Better shot blocker, not as developed offensively. Yes, better shot blocker. Most say best in a decade.

I remember Dick Vitale said he was the best shot blocker he had ever seen in HS.

  • And Drummond has a 40 inch vertical.

Will also say Marc is better than Paul

At this point its pretty clear, atleast at the center position. Pau makes a better PF

  • I dont think the Center position will be dominant again after the "Shaq Rules."

DHoward is elite, and there is a significant dropoff. With the legalization of the zone, that position has faded fast. Too clogged up in the paint for the typical Ewing vs Olajuwon matchups of old.

Centers now have to be extremely good offensive rebounders, efficient in pick n roll/pop situations, or hit 14+ ft jumpers to make differences offensively. Defensively, they can make differences because they can create log jams in the paint.

This is a pg league, and will remain that way for yrs to come imo. David Stern wanted to create an open, non iso, shooters gm. Thats what he's getting, as the ability to consistently knock down outside jumpers is what drives offenses these days. The ability to rebound, as a team, is slowly becoming less of a factor in the outcome of todays gms.

I hope the league does get influctuated with great bigs, 4s and 5s. Then the zone d's will be less effective on the superstars.

Imagine Durant, Rose, Kobe, or LBJ being able to play against single coverage predominantly for long stretches in gms.

For all of Miami's and OKC's greatness: They were in the bottom 10 in offensive rebs, assists, and turnovers/per gm. Which goes to show that, wing players make a world of difference in todays gm.

  • I don't think howard is all that great... if he was he would dominate with this weak ahh nba. Bynum has a better skill set but I don't think he likes playing second fiddle to the old guy. Neither 1 would make it in the 90's. Drummond is good but he isn't going to save the Center. Nobody can save the center position its a thing of the past with this fast pace no defense nba. Thats why everybody drafts PGs and SFs now...those are the two most important positions in this new nba.

I don’t think Zeller is a elite prospect at C. Seems to be more of a PF type and I don’t think he’s close to the prospect Greg Oden was, when he came out. Who at the time was an elite prospect. I haven’t seen much of Adam’s, or Tarzewki (sp?). I assume you think Isaiah Austin is going to be a PF?

I don’t think we’re going to get another Elite prospect at C until Okafor and Town’s come out.

  • As a UK fan I’m biased but I think DMAC has potential to be a great C in the NBA even though he thinks he’s a PF lol. He progressed this year as a player and I think is finally starting to grow up and become a leader for that team. I loved it when he didn’t back down to Blake.
