Roku vs Apple TV

  • anyone purchased both and done a personal review?

seems the only true difference i can see from the reviews are the following:

Roku - has 600 channels (i know subscriptions for some) vs 10 for Apple TV
Roku - doesn't allow any of the airplay Apple TV provides (my house is pretty much a MAC/IPAD/IPHONE house, so this is very attractive - streaming ESPN Watch to the TV is a big plus in my view, also photos, music,, etc... all from IOS - Roku allows photos, and maybe in the future will stream video but for now it doesn't.
both easy to hook up and use and cost roughly the same (although, i'm thinking i don't need the higher priced Roku, would go with the $49 option, so there is that) - savings of %50 if i went with Roku.

anyone have any stories to steer me one way or the other?

  • I looked into both. Went with Google TV and love it. The full web browser is nice. Also, at the time I looked it was the only one that put out 1080p. Apple TV and the others were only 720p.

    GO NOLES!

  • if you are already into a lot of apple products.. apple tv is the way to go.. and the new 3rd gen apple tv is 1080P so that is a non issue. I have the apple tv and I love it.. netflix and hulu with the streaming options..

  • Roku now does 1080p - which is nice too.

I checked on a few others, but not google TV - will check it out.

    Yes.

I was gonna get the Vizio Co-star but it was impossible to get for a while and by the time it was readily available, my tech budget was going in another direction.

Edit: Also have a Roku, but only the 720p version. We use it for Netflix, Amazon Streaming and Plex Media Server, It works fantastic for all three.

  • You can jailbreak the older ATV and add a ton of free movies, shows, etc.

Screw paying for that when you can get it free. Nobody should pay for music anymore either. Same idea.
