Ron Paul: Election shows U.S. 'far gone' - Washington Times

Rep. Ron Paul, whose maverick presidential bids shook the GOP, said in the wake of this weeks elections that the country has already veered over the fiscal cliff and he sees no chance of righting ship in a country where too many people are dependent on government.

"People do not want anything cut," he said. "They want all the bailouts to come. They want the Fed to keep printing the money. And they don't believe that we've gone off the cliff or are close to going off the cliff. They think we can patch it over, that we can somehow come up with some magic solution. But you can't have a budgetary solution if you don't change what the role of government should be. As long as you think we have to police the world and run this welfare state, all we are going to argue about is who will get the loot."

  • Ok. I failed. Lol.

I didn't even read the article, just assumed from the title. I'm an ass.

I agree with the basics of what he said, but not the direction in which certain things would end up.

  • This problem started waaay before this election but it's so true.

Romney loss, however, had nothing to do with handouts since romney will not cut the budget either.

    ReasonableDoubt

  • The handouts in general need to be limited. Also, illegal people should not receive any benefits.

Military spending is the more ridiculous. Pisses me off that you can be a nurse or policeman in military but that won't qualify u as a civilian.

What are your thoughts about illegals getting benefits?

Dont like it. Tax them. I'm not huge on any foreign aid. Not huge on war spending.

Can't say you r serious about cutting fidgeting without looking at military

    ReasonableDoubt

  • You do realize the money will run out at some time. Paul is right and you see the stock market responding this week. The only hope is for a grand bargain and if they try to kick it down the road, it will get ugly. The Fed can no longer save the market bc QE3 only last 1 month.

They're not supposed to be elligible, but unless there were stringent fraud enforcement (which would take money), I imagine it occurs in most states due to unfunded mandates. I don't think the use of welfare by illegals is what is driving up the cost though. It's the general expansion of elligibility and economic climate.

That's the beauty of it all really. Get the economy on track and it really solves it all.

I feel that out military should always be top notch. It is very important. Im sure cuts could be made everywhere. No money to illegals would be a easy start IMO.

The grand bargain needs to occur and it needs to address future deficits. If we can get deficits as a percentage of gdp below the growth rate (very reasonable), the debt to gdp ratio starts to shrink (we can't even begin to consider lower nominal debt yet). If the grand bargain occurs, you will see market stabilization and then growth which helps two-fold: increases revenue (which lowers deficit) and increase gdp growth (which can lower debt to gdp ratio)

  • One interesting thing I saw was the US spent 62k per family under the poverty line last year. Can we just hand them 40k and call it a day and save 22k a family. Just cut out the government crap and it would be a lot easier. I am not for hand outs but If we can save 35.4%, it is a start.

BLF, I actually agree with you. I do think it takes a lot of cuts on the budget, including military and entitlements. I am ok with raising some taxes as long as there are cuts to go along with it.

Well I imagine most of that covers defense,Medicare, social security...that's why needs to he cut. Proportionally, there really isn't much "crap".

Even if it isn cuts, the future deficits are determined by baseline spending increases, so if we could cap, that would be beneficial also. That could be a compromise.
