Rose Bowl worth $80 Million per year?

  • Wow talking about setting the bar. That is a huge payout. What do you guys think.

Quote "A source told CBSSports.com that the Rose Bowl's new deal with ESPN essentially sets the price for the semifinals in the playoff that begins in 2014. Sports Business Journal reported on Monday that ESPN's deal with the Rose Bowl was worth $80 million that could push the value of the playoff past $600 million. The Rose Bowl deal represented a 167 percent increase in the previous deal ($30 million) according to SBJ. The $80 million could set the bar for bowls flowing through the semifinals."

  • The Rose Bowl has always been considered the gold standard for bowl games. It deserves a huge piece of the pie.

It will be interesting to see how it remains on top with the new format in place.

  • The numbers for the Champions Bowl haven't been announced yet. Figure it will be about the same?

Probably slightly less due to having no tradition tied to it. But it will be massive as well.

No. Rose Bowl is the grandaddy for a reason. What I would like to see is the numbers for the Orange Bowl.

It is kind of sad. The Orange Bowl used to get marquee matchups every year up until 2007 when it was Louisville VS Wake. After that, it has been a mix of garbage. Zero big names.

I put $$$ on the Rose Bowl getting the first title game in the new format.

Once we went to 5 bcs bowls, they all got watered down, and the Orange Bowl to the brunt of that.

probably a little less in broadcasting, but will make up the difference in other areas since the conferences own the game.

It really hurt them that they got stuck with the Big East champ many times over the last 5 years. Also, having VT over and over again certainly didn't do the bowl any favors. That is not a knock on VT, it's just that it deminishes the outside interest when the same team goes to the same bowl multiple times in a short period.

Pfff the champions bowl will have the best teams. I bet fox or NBC will bid big for it.

  • Look at the TV ratings for BCS bowls. The Rose Bowl is consistently the highest outside of the national championship game. No one has any idea what a Champions Bowl will bring that will likely not have the best teams from the Big XII and SEC (on years that it doesn't hold the playoff game).

As opposed to the not best teams from pac and big slow? Those teams are garbage compared to ours.

The B1G has shown that they will draw well in the TV ratings even if they aren't the top team in the conference or the nation. The PAC does well regionally on the West Coast which is a place where no other conference really moves the needle.

This isn't about the quality of the teams that play, it is about the draw. The Rose Bowl is the biggest draw of them all.

Stupid post but it's also incorrect. Alabama has a 4-0 record in the Rose Bowl as they are quick to tell you.

What's sad is that it is played in a $25,000 stadium.

    I've seen better.

Air Force, Washington, and BYU all have better views, IMO.

I have just gotten spoiled and would rather have a little bit more of a fan friendly location. If Alabama plays there, I am sure I will suffer through it again though.

I hear ya. The first company I worked for had a plant out in Monument CO, right next to where AF plays. It was a pretty awesome site.
