How is this game any different than the current cotton bowl?

sec and big 12 own this game. it is not going to be a traditional bowl. every dime the game makes (tv money, ticket sales, concessions, sponsorship, etc...) goes directly to the conferences. it's is the first bowl game of it's kind.

They'll have to re-name it if A&M ever plays in it. That or they'll have to make their girls basketball team suit up instead. lol

    Got this from UGA site:

Here is the official announcement from the SEC that I just received ...

SEC AND BIG 12 CHAMPIONS TO MEET IN POST-SEASON BOWL GAME

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 18, 2012) – The Southeastern Conference and the Big 12 Conference announced today a five-year agreement for their football champions to meet in a post-season bowl game following the 2014 season.

The champions of the two conferences will be in the matchup unless one or both are selected to play in the new four-team model to determine the national championship. Should that occur, another deserving team from the conference(s) would be selected for the game.

“A new January bowl tradition is born,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. “This new game will provide a great match-up between the two most successful conferences in the BCS era and will complement the exciting post-season atmosphere created by the new four-team model. Most importantly, it will provide our student-athletes, coaches and fans with an outstanding bowl experience.”

“Our goal is to provide the fans across the country with a New Year’s Day prime-time tradition,” commented acting Big 12 Conference Commissioner Chuck Neinas. “This is a landmark agreement between two of the most successful football conferences during the BCS era to stage a post-season event. The creation of this game featuring the champions of the Big 12 and SEC will have tremendous resonance in college football.”

“I am very excited by the prospects for a game between our champion and the champion of the Southeastern Conference,” added in-coming Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

During the 14-year history of the Bowl Championship Series the Big 12 and SEC lead the nation with 11 seasons in which each conference has had at least one team ranked in the top four of the final BCS standings. Both conferences share the top spot all-time with 14 teams each that have finished in the top four of the final BCS Standings. The two conferences have combined for 16 appearances in the BCS National Championship Game, with the Big 12 ranking second behind the SEC’s nine appearances with seven trips to the National Championship Game.

The two league champions have met twice in BCS bowl games since 1998, both in BCS National Championship Games. In 2010, Alabama defeated Texas, 37-21, in Pasadena, Cal., and in 2009, Florida defeated Oklahoma, 24-14, in Miami, Fla.

Specific details, including host site(s), will be announced at a later date

interesting for sure , be one hell of a game

  • I think Slive chose his words carefully. "a new tradition is born"

  • Slive is no joke.

  • Someone please explain to me how the SEC didn't just get pwned by the B12. This deal is amazing for the B12 and probably puts it back solidly among the Big Boy conferences. It also will make it easier for the B12 to attract additional members (including FSU), but what does it do for the SEC that the Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl couldn't do better? The only thing I can figure is that the bowl will be owned and controlled directly by the SEC/B12, but if that is the attraction the SEC should have just done it by themselves. They would not have to share control or money with the B12. Basically, they would be setting up their own version of the Sugar Bowl. Seems to me the B12 easily walked away with the most out of this deal.

The SEC doesn't want a conference limit for the playoffs.

The Rose Bowl is what's holding the playoffs back. The B1G and Pac12 picked up the SECs former ally the ACC last week. Slive just went to the B12 and made them a lot of money.

Slive nearly destroyed the B12 last year and now this year they are smiling and excited to shake hands with him. That takes a special kind of person.

So this is just to spite the ACC for supporting conference champions?

Well, they did change their allegence in the playoff talks. But it was done to protect the SEC.

The ACC supports conference champions because it makes the most sense for them. They aren't doing it to stab the SEC in the back. They are doing it because it will make it easier for them to get a team into the playoffs. But if you're saying this is some sort of SEC payback for the ACC going against its wishes, well, ok. I still don't see how it actually benefits the SEC. In fact, to the extent that it hurts the Sugar and Cotton Bowls, it has the potential to hurt the SEC. And the big winner clearly is the B12.
