SEC Fans - Ted Roof

  • How well does he balance the blitz with base defenses? Because on some of our linebackers remarks, I am legitimately worried about our defense dumbing down. for most of the last decade, we've had one of the most consistently good defenses in America, and the reason for that was because we were generally so good upfront, that we rarely needed to blitz. We'd only blitz to cover a deficiency when we were struggling to get pressure without our front 4.

So now we backers who are talking about being excited for constantly blitzing...and the thing is, we run a 4 - 3. Doing that too much is a recipe for disaster.

Has Roof been smart about his blitzing?

  • When he was at Auburn, there were definitely some philosophical differences between him and Chiz so the product on the field was a trainwreck most of the time. He is supposedly a guy who likes to bring pressure with multiple fronts. We didn't see that for the most part at Auburn. We played more Cover 2 which is Chiz more comfortable philosophy. Granted, other than some good D linemen, we had garbage for talent on defense while he was there. He hasn't been very successful at other stops where he was running more a "Roof" defense. He's a likable guy and the kids will like him but his results haven't been great anywhere.

Most Alabama fans aren't going to give you anything decent on him and half of thed Auburn fans blame him for everything.

He never meshed with Chizik and he didn't have the talent in place. Priority at the end of Tuberville and during Chizik's early years was on getting players for the spread offense.

He did put together some great DLines with some OK talent, minus Fairley. He never had the LBers that you have. He had run stoppers that couldn't cover or cover guys that were too small. DBs were non-existant.

I think you have to look past his time at Auburn to see what he is all about and he was very successful. The 2010 defense wasn't that bad. They gave up big plays but could absolutely stuff the run.

He had some great young talent this past year, but with inexperience you have to simplify things as well.

  • At least Cutcliff has made Duke somewhat competive while Roof had Duke as a walking mat his whole tenure there. I believe Cutcliff has won more games in one season at Duke than Roof won in all his years there.

  • You Penn State guys dont remember facing him when he was at Minnesota? My advice is find a Cam Newton clone and Pray like Chiz and the fam did in 2010. Look at AU in 2009 and 2011 and you'll see what to expect..Hell look at AU in 2010..Poor tackling, a ton of 15 yard penalties terrible 3rd down defense big celebrations by your players after making a tackle on a 5 yard gain..Other than that, you have great DC leading your defense..

  • He was nominated for the Broyles award for the top assistant in college football in 2000 while at Georgia Tech.

His defenses ranked 12th and 23rd nationally in 2000 and 2001 at GaTech.

When he arrived at Duke as the DC after O'Leary left GaTech in 2002 he took the 113th ranked defense to 58th in one year. In 2003, they ranked 3rd in pass defence in the ACC and 4th overall.

When he got to Minnesota, his defense gave up 160 fewer passing yards per game and 135 fewer total yards per game than the previous year. Scoring defense went from 109th to 61st. Rush defense went from 114th to 69th. Total defense went from dead last to 79th.

Until he got to Auburn, he had some great success if you consider what he found when he arrived at places. I just don't think Chizik did a good job of doing his homework in the hire and hired a guy that had great results, but didn't see eye to eye with his philosophies on defense.

I remember reading about the stats, but just the way our backers talk about blitzing has me worried. With Penn State, it's not like you have to "fix" the defense too much. basically, just get a better secondary. But with Roof, I'm afraid he's just going to change the identity of Penn State defense - a tradition that goes way back.

Bradley didn't want to be an assistant coach at Penn State when Joe wasn't there. I think O'Brien may have offered him the job.

I don't know that I would agree with this. With O'Brien as a head coach, Bradley was never going to be the DC. O'Brien and Roof have had a good working relationship for many years now. I was impressed with the work that Roof did in Minnesota.

I think the main differences you are going to see between Roof and Bradley are that Bradley's philosophies were really built around the simple/safe defense where you minimize big plays and make teams execute from the QB position to beat you. With a lack of really good QB's in the Big 10... this made the defense look and preform very good. Plus the talent in the front 7 has been excellent for some time now. But look at what Brady Quinn, Mark Sanchez, Wisconsin (last year), Houston (in the bowl) did to that vaunted defense... absolutely destroyed it. The only thing I care about in Roof's time at Auburn (mainly because so many have pointed out the rift in philosophies between he and Chizik) is the National Championship game when they held Oregon under 20pts. Those that think our defense is going to all of a sudden start getting idiotic penalties and blow assignments because Roof is the DC forget that we still have LJ Sr. and Vandy as D-line and LB coaches. Roof may give up a few more plays by gambling with some blitzes, pre-snap motion, and different coverages. But I am excited to see our talent be given a chance to compete when we play an offense with a pulse.
