-The current best American Sprinter, Tyson Gay, has a net worth of $12 million -Walter Dix, in 2008, signed an Endorsement deal for $1 million per year. This doesn't include earnings from track events nor other endorsements
Neither of the above 2 guys has an Olympic Gold Medal. Imagine their salary/ net worth if they did.
The quality of life post NFL for RBs is not good. In addition to physical ailments (ex. knees, back) their odds of some brain trauma related long-term malady is very probable. See Earl Campbell for the physical effects and former Bama, Patriots, Eagles FB, Kevin Turner, who suffers from ALS.
****Former NFL players are 8x more likely to be diagnosed with ALS than are other men in their age group**** and the average lifespan of former NFL players is 55 ...52 for lineman.
Smart decision by Demps.

Ok but your numbers are also skewed. Did Gay not run in the last olympics? compare that to guys in the NFL making serious bank and the money advantage goes to the NFL. Now you are 110% correct about the quallity of life after your career.

Skewed how?
Tyson Gay ran the 100m dash at the 2008 Olympics but didn't make the finals as he suffered a severe hamstring injury several weeks earlier and wasn't able to train as he ran 10.05 when he was disqualified but had been running low/mid 9.8x prior to his injury and ran 9.69 in 2009.
Demps' college career has been comparable to that of Walter Dix and better than Tyson Gay's. Demps has a very legit chance to make the 2012 Oympic team and thus I think the Gay and Dix examples are relevant.

There are more important things in life than money. I have a Career Path that could lead to my making $3 million a year as a Senior Partner at a Big Four Accounting Firm. Given the hours and stress that the job entails.....I really have no current desire to become a Senior Partner.
A good income and health is better that a million a year+ and bad health.
That's just my perspective. I'm sure many others would disagree. However, if Demps were my son or younger brother I'd be happy with his decision to run track.

Skewed because Gay was in the olympics. While Demps may have a very good chance at making it in (Honestly couldn't tell you as I don't follow the sport that closely) you can't expect him to be payed like Gay right of the bat. I'd guess he would make more money to start his career in the NFL, and assuming he doesn't get hurt, he would probably make more over the length of his career.

Perhaps you shouldn't post as though you are an "expert" on a topic in which you have a dearth of knowledge. I clearly stated that Walter Dix received a $1 million a year endorsement directly out of college and this doesn't include earnings from track events or other endorsements.
