SEC fans excluding Auburn

  • I want to get a feel for what other fans would think about a potential hire at Auburn. I don't care about off the field type stuff. Just purely on how you thing the coaches would do in the SEC against your team and other in conference. Basically tell me why this or that hire would concern you or you just love because you think it's a bad fit. Keep the opinions of if we could or if we should hire out of it. Just purely on how you think it would affect you guys. So the list would be:

    Gus Malzahn
    Jimbo Fisher
    Bobby Petrino
    Jeff Fisher
    Kirby Smart
    Fedora
    Mora Jr
    Gary Patterson

  • Jeff Fisher would be interesting.

    I have been really impressed with what Mora Jr has done this year. First I have heard his name thrown out there.

    Petrino doesn't worry me at all if that tells you anything. I think he has the ability to make you guys good but not championship level good.

  • Jimbo, Jeff, and Mora Jr. have the ability to establish Auburn into a consistent powerhouse. These coaches know how to run an organization as well as produce on the field. I think Malzahn, Petrino, and Fedora will offer more of the same which is much like a roller coaster. With Kirby you simply do not know. He has the pedigree, but you never know how that will transition. Plus, I don't think AU is patient enough.

    I think you have to ask yourself the question, do you want to win now or do you want to establish a history of winning? In my personal opinion, if I were the AD at Auburn I would be talking with Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern. He runs a top notch program, and his teams always overachieve. If he were to surround himself with a solid DC and few excellent SEC tested recruiters he would develop a program at AU that fans could be proud of.

    Patterson, fisher, Petrino IMO would be definite good hires that would make auburn a top 10 team. Petrino has shown he can really make gold out of mud on offense regardless of his recruiting

    Good for UF. I mean look what he has done with FSU, consistently underachieved. Plus I think Muschamp is catching up to Jimbo and can consistently beat him so I don't want him to go anywhere. I think the best coaches on the list are Patterson or Malzhan.

    I tend to agree with this list.

    Not sure why, but I'm not sold on Patterson. What's he doing that Fran didn't do or wouldn't have done at TCU. I think he's fools gold.

    Malzhan would be interesting to see what would happen, but I just don't see him as a big time HC at a major University.

    Personally I pretty much agree with this other than the Kirby part. I think it would be a meh hire. I know he can recruit and he seems to be an outstanding DC. No one knows how good of a HC he could be though.

    I was going to post the same exact thing. I had this conversation with an Auburn friend of mine and used Tiger as a prime example. I would worry if the guy lost his swagger with the scandal.

    Patterson would be the homerun hire that would make most Bama fans nervous. Jimbo would be pretty good but I think the verdict is still out on him. Smart would make for good conversation...he would recruit Georgia like a madman.

    I would laugh if Auburn hired Gus. Both he and Fedora would be gone in 3 years.

    No point in even talking to Jef Fisher(not leaving the NFL) or Mora Jr(not leaving the West Coast).

    I actually think this is worth nothing. I just don't think he is worth the risk. Especially for Auburn.

    Like the above poster said they need to think long term.

    Agreed, anyone that comes to the SEC running a base defense of 4-2-5 will get run off the field regularly

    Bobby Petrino- good hire but I agree with Luciano about losing his edge
    Jeff Fisher- homerun but the notion of a 16 year NFL coach making 7 mill a year going to a college job is so asinine I can't even begin to wrap my head around it
    Kirby Smart- would piss me off
    Fedora-so so
    Mora Jr- homerun (I was high on him the second UCLA hired him. He wouldn't put up with Dye/Lowder/etc's BS so I think he would either finally rid AU of all those guys or not make it long)
    Gary Patterson- really good hire

    Thanks but a FYI type thing... Lowder doesn't have much to do with all of this anymore. He's not on the BOTs anymore and isn't the president of the bank. I'm sure he is involved somewhat but there are other BOTs that have way more power than him now. Dye was never and will never be on the same level as how Lowder was. We do have incompetent leaders still though. Just neither one of those.
