SEC/ACC recruiting chat with Keith Niebuhr

What do you think of Jay Ellison?

Very good. Just not very tall.

I think that's the main reason he's not a more high-profile recruit. I've seen his film and in person, and he makes plays. Pretty explosive. Pretty strong. Very aggressive.

Could be a steal for someone

Ok since not many questions are being asked Ill throw another one out there. Do you think Denver Kirkland and Matthew Thomas end up at the same school together and where do you see each of them headed at this point?

Not sure if they'll end up at the same school .... Right now, I'd say FSU has a slight lead for Thomas over Miami and Bama. And Miami, to me, is the team to beat for Kirkland, though FSU and USF are right there. That all can change of course, but that's what I'm told as of this morning.

  • Did Michigan find a gem in Channing Stribling, I see he had another strong week.

  • FYI: UCLA has offered RB/DB Corn Elder of Nashville ... He's coming off 2 really strong weeks

  • What would you say are Derrick Henry's strengths and weakness as a running back? Not as an athlete, but only if you're evaluating him as a running back. Also how would you rank Tyren Jones, Altee Tenpenny, and Derrick Henry as running backs right now and who do you think has the best future?

Possibly so ... I watched him play two weeks ago and he's a gamer, that's for sure. Has an excellent presence out there. Runs well. Jumps well. Just makes plays. Always is around the action. Probably could play WR in college, but given his size he's better-suited for DB ... He attacks the ball

    Next question

    haha, fair enough.

what about sleeper prospect in the region that could blow up their sr year? any out there with an inexplicably low amount of offers?

and how do you think a&m and mizzou will fair vs the sec powers in recruiting going forward? are there and guys that would typically be sec/acc only guys that they are looking to steal?

Look, Derrick can run, and run well. He's a big, fast kid ... For his size, he can really motor. He's got good feet and is tough to bring down. He also has nice balance for someone that big. And when he's in the open field, he's an absolute load to bring down. So, the tools are there to be successful at RB. The question -- and it's a legit one -- is this: Is he too tall and does he play too high? The reason people bring this up is because given his height, that would leave his knees in the worst possible spot. An RB hurts his knees and he's never the same. So that's crucial, and why people like him at other spots. But yes, he's a very good running back. Won't be an easy call for college coaches.

We have Tenpenny ahead of Jones ... and Derrick rated as the No. 2 athlete. Only way to answer the last part of your question

Still say Auburn is the team to beat

Ok then follow up...what makes Tenpenny the better prospect than Jones? Not questioning the rankings here just basically looking for some strengths and weaknesses of both guys.

Maybe a guy like Maurice Swain of Troup County (Ga.) ... DT/OG ... solid player, but had to work on his grades. As the grades improve (and I hear he's doing well), I expect interest in him to go way up.

I like them both. You're almost splitting hairs with these two. They're both excellent. And they both can do so much. Tenpenny is just a little bit bigger, and maybe a little tougher to bring down. But again, if you're Bama, you've got to be thrilled. These are two complete RBs.

with UF's string of recent decommits, i know some were probly told it wasnt going to work for grades etc, do you think some of it has to do with Muschamp not wanting kids to take visits? he seems to be using the same tactics that Texas used where you get a ton of kids to commit early and not do visits without getting dumped. i dont want to call it pressuring them but thats what it seems like. do you see it that way and do you think that will work out in this region? i dont think many kids respond well to being told no visits

Non-issue in the case of the de-commits

A few of these kids had off-the-field issues to work thru.

Don't believe what's your thinking is a big deal at all. UF doesn't like its commits to visit other schools, but it happens. Marqui Haskins is a kid that will check other places out.

Again, not really an issue ... Not why those kids no longer are UF commits

No way to predict if he can keep it going. Nobody knows the answer to that. But he is doing well so far.

Would a rough season hurt? Maybe a little. Probably not that much.

Again, the kids locked in for 2013 probably wouldn't be swayed. They would see any struggle as an opening for them to play earlier. And what does every kid want? To play early.

But also, kids aren't dumb -- they know Rome wasn't built in a day. It's a process to turn a program around. They get that.

It's fans that often can't comprehend that.
