SIAP again, but Tim Brown this time

  • Just saw on the ESPN bottomline that Tim Brown has been extensively quoted that he believes that Bill Callahan collaborated with Jon Gruden to have the Raiders fold against the Bucs in that Super Bowl because of the hatred that both guys shared for Al Davis.

Saying that Callahan completely changed up the gameplan 36 hours before the game. Claims he of course can't prove it but he believes that Callahan took a dive. Pretty strong accusations.

General consensus has been one of the 3 reactions:

    - No way. That's ridiculous.
    - Our gameplan seemed a bit strange.
    - I'm surprised it took this long for anyone to say anything.

Two out of three of those say there might be some truth to Tim's claims.

And it was a mentally handicapped defensive player who said no way. Think LB, steroids, and brain trauma.

  • The crazy thing was according to Tim Brown the alleged, original game plan was to pound it on the ground and they ran the ball 9 times, 7 of which went to the 3rd RB.

    PTCcock195

  • Actually Chris Mortensen has come out and said that John Ritchie, who is now an analyst with ESPN, is claiming the same thing that Tim Brown is. Saying that the day before Barrett Robins went nuts in Tijuana was when Callahan changed the gameplan.

He claims that their plan leading up until about 36 hours before kickoff was to ground and pound them. Now you have two pretty credible players on that team saying that something fishy was going on.

You have to think that this story is going to grow some legs pretty quick. I mean when accusations about fixing a Super Bowl are getting thrown out there, you have to believe that this will be the next big story you hear. Manti Te'o, you can now officially remove the noose from your neck.

Instead they only rushed a whopping 9 times for 19 yards and threw it 44 times! 5 of those were interception by the leagues MVP. Rice didn't even touch the ball until the 3rd quarter was almost over.

Jerry Rice agrees Bill Callahan sabotaged Super Bowl | NFL.com

Tim Brown made waves by accusing former coach Bill Callahan of sabotaging the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. Jerry Rice backed Browns sentiments during a Tuesday interview with ESPN.

Well I would hate his fvcking guts at this point if I were a Raiders fan. Even if he didn't "sabotage" the thing purposefully, what kind of coach switches up his game plan less then a day and a half before kickoff of the Super Bowl?

This is also something to think about. Your pro-bowl center goes batshit crazy basically twelve hours after this whole complete change of schemes occurs. Being a center at any level is extremely difficult, but on the pro's it is almost impossible. I mean the center is the qb on all of the offenses blocking schemes. It's not the Raiders fault that the guy was bipolar or anything, BUT do you think that might have just been something that could have pushed the guy over the edge.

You tell a bipolar NFL center less than a day and a half before the Super Bowl that everything we have prepared for is getting scrapped and you are going to have to adjust? That is like fvcking a 400 lb woman on a waterbed from the early 80's. You are basically just asking for the thing to pop.

Man I hate to bring this up, but today being the anniversary of Paterno's death today makes you really think about just how insignificant that Te'o lying about a girlfriend is.

It's weird and I don't get it and all but at least nobody was hurt. I mean Paterno lied about knowing things that could have saved children's lives and didn't because he thought it would tarnish HIS image. People are trying to distance that atrocity when it comes to Paterno and trying to jump on Te'o in the same breath. Just shows you how the hot story is the only one that counts I guess.

Sorry PSU fans. I was just speaking my mind on that one as it is unfolding on ESPN while I'm typing.

Look, we went over this 100 times, but the evidence that "proved" that Paterno lied is a single email that refered to "coach". In every other email, Paterno is refered to as Joe. Sandusky was a "coach" as well.

I don't want this to turn into a pissing match. It would not surprise me if Paterno knew about 1998, but Sandusky was investigated and not charged in 1998. So I don't see how that is relavent. Paterno passed the buck on the info McQueary gave him... I am disappointed that he didn't do more. But putting the onus on your superiors in such a matter is not damning. He didn't want to deal with it and thought that the people above him would.

    It is what it is.

Not the whole story but I tend to agree with Florio on this.

    Mike Florio
    ----
I have all the respect in the world for Jerry Rice, but blaming Callahan for Robbins’ actions is ridiculous. Robbins is a man who has struggled with mental illness for most of his life. A man who struggles with mental illness is battling demons much more profound than a coach changing his game plan. Does Rice also blame Callahan for the legal and personal problems that have plagued Robbins in the decade since his NFL career ended?

Rice also doesn’t seem to accurately remember how that Super Bowl went down. In his ESPN appearance, Rice said Callahan called on the Raiders “to throw the ball over 60 times.” But the Raiders didn’t throw the ball 60 times or even 50 times. They threw 44 times — exactly three more times than they had thrown the ball the week before, when they won the AFC Championship Game.

And that brings us to the strangest part of all this criticism of Callahan: Brown and Rice are insisting that Callahan sabotaged the team by implementing a pass-first offensive game plan. But the Raiders had been a passing team all season: They led the NFL in passing yards that season while ranking 18th in the league in rushing yards and 23rd in the league in rushing attempts. In other words, Callahan called a lot of passes in the Super Bowl because it was calling a lot of passes that had led them to the Super Bowl in the first place.
    ----
I would also add that the better explination in my mind is that Callahan had a change of heart on the game plan because its what they did well. Its much more believable that Callahan got cold feet over the game plan or isn't that great of a coach rather than he threw a game. Its a much more likely explanation for one. And I don't remember the game, but noting the score, once you start getting behind you throw it more, and given that they were a throwing team its what you would do regardless.
