Saban in favor of a 9th conference game

  • Spoke about it today and supported that possibility at the SEC meetings.

I do think when the SEC network starts it will probably happen as well.

Saban favored 9-game SEC schedules with new teams | The Montgomery Advertiser | montgomeryadvertiser.com

Alabama coach Nick Saban wouldn't mind playing a ninth Southeastern Conference game every season.

  • Big 12 plays 9 conference games this year and i hope it stays that was wheb we get back to 12. Its only common sense to play at least 9 conference, or as many conference games as possible. It is your conference afterall.

Too bad that doesn't work for beating Va Tech. Maybe stick to picking on Dabo.......oh wait sorry.

  • None conference games will make the SEC seem much tighter than just eight. Hope Alabama will continue to schedule one marquee non conference game.

I agree. I'm looking forward to the MSU-Bama series. Please be gentle this time.

Undecided. I like it other than you would all but eliminate good OOC games

Don't have to eliminate the good ones if teams would just drop Southeastern Illinois State Tech from their schedules.

But after playing 9 sec games we aren't going to have Ohio st or Texas looming on our schedule

Why not? I swear, I would love it if there were 4 major conferences of 64 teams, and those 64 teams could only play each other. No FCS, no mid majors.... Just bCS vs. BCS all year long. THAT would be great football.

  • Help me with my math. If we play 9 games that's an extra 7-8 loses for the entire conference. I think that's why they won't do it

Going to 9 forced WVU to drop their only decent OOC for this year. Found room to hold onto James Madison though.

    be about 7 more losses.

would hurt bowl possible bowl scenarios which in turn would hurt bowl payment money

    I don't see it happening

I think the extra TV revenue from having 7 more games to go with the SEC network would make up for having one less bowl eligible team. Besides, the payout for that lowest tier bowl game isn't exactly bringing in that much.

They kept James Madison because they are playing them in FedEx Field. It probably would have cost more then the $500,000 that we paid FSU back to back out of the contract with Mr. Daniel Synder.

Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt tonight, no doubt, they shouldn't have played the Old Gold and Blue!

Doesn't change the fact that it happened. I know there are plenty of reasons to keep one game over another. Just strange that out of the 4 games, the toughest one it the one that is picked.

I was mainly responding to MM's post to not eliminate the good game, but to drop the Southeast Illinois St. games or whoever he said. Just interesting that his own school had the same option this year and chose to drop the FSU game and not one of the others, but is keeping James Madison.

Honestly, I would think that you should beat FSU if you played this year. I really like WVU or OU to have a chance to play in the BCSCG.

    LOL...

Nobody would agree that WVU "should" beat FSU. The D is every bit as good as LSU or Alabama, and I'd lay money you'd never say that about them.

They very well could've beaten FSU. I hate that we won't get to find out, but it wasn't really WVU's fault. Gotta look out for number one.

I am sure that there is someone that thinks WVU could beat FSU. I think WVU could possibly play with LSU and Bama as well. They did play LSU as well as any team other than Alabama and maybe Mississippi St last year......and that includes 2 other teams that were ranked in the top 10 as well at the end of the year. They have a great QB and probably the 2nd best WR group in the country behind USC. FSU possibly has a great defense, one of the top 5 in football, but the offense isn't there to match either. If WVU could put up 24 points or so, they could easily win the game. I am not saying it would happen, but it is not that far fetched.

I never said it was WVU's fault, but there were 2 other games on the schedule that could have been dropped if they really wanted to (not counting Marshall as that is a state rival that I am sure they wouldn't want to let go). The Big12 could have worked the schedule around that game if they had wanted to keep it. Anything could have happened.

I am not saying that they shouldn't have dropped it in the first place. Just that if a West Virginia fan is going to tell the SEC schools they should drop an FCS team instead of a big OOC game when/if they go to 9 conference games, then it would sound better if they had done the same thing.

Nothing I stated was a knock on FSU as much it is what I think WVU could do. I think this could be the best team they have ever had and if they can get past the some of the travel issues of going to a lot of stadiums for the first time, they could make a run at the BCSCG. It will be tough, but their only extremely hard road game is Texas, assuming Oklahoma St takes a predictable step back for a year or two.

  • I was very vocal about wanting wvu to keep fsu on schedule. I dont see what that has to do with my point of needing to play as many conference games as possible, and that wouldnt FORCE schools to lose big time OOC games.

SEC needs to go to 9 conference games and drop one of the cupcakes. Saban always wants to play, at least, one marquee team. Wish we would go to two though.

I'm fine with this. As long as we get to keep the Tennessee tradition going, even if we add two more teams, then I'm fine with playing an extra SEC game.

  • Most SEC teams would drop their one big OOC game if this were to happen. If they didn't then they would just be taking money away from smaller teams that the SEC teams pay to play them.

Some teams would, but Saban loves the kickoff games. Can be used as a solid recruiting tool.

Bama hasn't finished their '13 OOC schedule yet (outside of VT and Chattanooga).
