Saban to Texas

  • Is this possible in the near future?? Lets say Mack underachieves again at Texas, which is totally possible. They can him. Nick Saban
Wins another title at Bama. Texas looking for a new coach, throws a ridiculous amount of money at Saban. Great coaches like new challenges.... Would Nick Saban do it? Is Texas capable of stealing coach Saban??

    NPS13

  • Saban retiring at Bama seems 90% likely.

  • Texas is too far away from the Lake.

    Anything is possible though.

Who is Mack's most likely replacement? Patterson?

Yeah, it's just crazy to think Texas would go after/want the best coach in the country.

    I can't believe you're serious

Would be interesting if Texas could sway Chris Petersen and reunite him with Bryan Harsin.

    Macks

  • IMO he retires at Bama, the only place he could go that would be a "step up" would be ND and there is a 0.0000001% chance that happens.

100% serious. saban is a winner all the way, but as far as personality, he's the exact opposite of what texas wants it's coaches to be. lester would be a close second in that regard.

i think he's probably high on the list.

as someone already mentioned, i think peterson is who dodds really wants. he's turned down big money and big jobs before though, so i don't know how realistic that is.

i wouldn't discount diaz. he's really impressed the big dollar donors in how he handles himself.

Notre Dame? How in the hell is ND a "step up" from Bama?

With all due respect to Diaz, why would UT take that risk? #1 and #2 on my list would be Saban and Patterson. Patterson probably knows Texas HS football as well or better than Mack and, IMO, is a better X's and O's guy than Mack. Can you imagine what Patterson could do with UT talent? Saban is intriguing, but at a minimum you will get into a bidding war for him with Bama and he will cost you a not so small fortune. Also, by the time Mack steps down, Saban's best years might be behind him. And Diaz has never been a HC ... anywhere. If I'm Deloss Dodds, my first (or, at worst, second) call is to Patterson.

Note: Petersen is an interesting idea, but it is high risk. So is Chip Kelly. Look at what happened to RR at UM and Dan Hawkins at CU. I don't see the risk-reward of those picks when Patterson is right in your backyard.

  • Plus Bama wouldn't have lost to Tulsa, Navy, Boston College, etc. I'm still amazed Notre Dame has that national attraction, because they haven't done shit recently.

Exactly, that's why it's a "step up" a team with the history, fanbase and media coverage like ND and yet they have been mediocre for 20 years. Imagine if Saban could resurrect the glory days of ND, imagine what that could do for his "legacy".

Let's be serious, it's not personality, it's whether the coach will submit to the people who want to control him. I remember about 20 years of Bama doing this, too. As Bama fell further and further into mediocrity, then hired an alum with his daddy's name, and still looked lifeless, they decided to say screw it and hire the best coach, period. Give him money, guarantee complete control of his program, guarantee no meddling from boosters, and give him whatever budget he wants as long as the program can afford it without state money. Turns out winning creates more revenue than having a puppet as the coach.

You'll get there someday if you make a couple bad hires after Mack. But let's be serious...UT can hire a very good coach that will submit to the power brokers and keep that program at least close to elite.

The difference is, Saban at UT would be unbeatable after a couple years.

i don't disagree re: diaz/patterson in terms of experience and knowledge of texas high schools/coaches. i'm just saying that diaz has been very impressive off the field, and it wouldn't surprise a lot of people if he's considered.

saban is a non-starter. not even an option for dodds. and it doesn't matter anyway, because why would he leave bama? he's kicking ass there, having statues erected, and he's their living god. he's crimson tide til he dies, imo.

i think peterson would be very successful at the right bigtime school. personally, i don't know if he's outgoing enough to be the hc at texas. he's a pretty reserved guy as far as i can tell. not sure if he'd be good at all the alumni glad handing that role entails.
