Saban to Texas

Exactly, that's why it's a "step up" a team with the history, fanbase and media coverage like ND and yet they have been mediocre for 20 years. Imagine if Saban could resurrect the glory days of ND, imagine what that could do for his "legacy".

Yeah, if only Bama had history, fanbase, and media coverage. Or at least had they gone through a couple of decades of turmoil and mediocrity. Maybe if they had a lot of championships. But alas, I must bow out of the argument. ND breaks the tie with a more fertile recruiting demographic.

Well... maybe he could get them into a conference? shrug

ND has a national fanbase, an NBC TV deal and media coverage that makes you think they're set for an undefeated season. do you think Rudy would have been made had it happened at any other school? Why do you think recruits still flock to a school that hasn't been particularly good in 20 years?

Bama has history, fanbase and media coverage but not on Notre Dame's level, you could though make an argument for Bama having a winning history on par with ND.

  • I could see it if they threw $10 mill at him.

A lot of college coaching is smoke and mirrors. Coaches usually don't get as much out of their team after they've been there for about 5 years. They come in and energize the team and fanbase to get a few more wins. Wins then get the recruits that help get more wins. But then the cycle of miss-truths/stink catches up to them and production drops. The longer they stay, the tougher it gets. Examples being Meyer, Petrino, Carroll, etc.

Now, Saban has a symbiotic relationship going on with Bama that would be hard to beat. If he wants to stick around and work for another 5 years though, it probably won't be at Bama.

I get what you're saying, and you're right about the national following and national perception of them. That perception is falling fast and hard, though. Bama's winning history is on par with ND at the very least. Everyone has their own take on the championships Bama claims, but when you pare it down like the media finally did in the past couple years (AP and BCS only), Bama still has more. But your point is well taken. It's just that the reality is that A) national perception isn't necessarily reality and B) any good coach knows that it's a hell of a lot easier to win at Tex/USC/Bama than ND. Would Saban win at ND? Sure. But not like he's winning at Bama, or like he would at UT or USC. Saban at Florida would be probably the scariest.

  • The further Catholicism sinks in this country, this further ND will as well. It's only a matter of time.

I was born and raised Catholic; however, I haven't been to mass in about three or four years. It's hard to believe in something you can't see.

I disagree here. If Saban wants to "stick around and work" another five years he will do just that and continue to compete for championships most every season. I don't think we'll have to worry about his philosophies falling on def ears as you previously mentioned. It's well know within the program that Saban has tweaked some of his older philosophies to ensure he continues to get the most out of his players and coaches.

He's never going back to the NFL. I can't figure out why people think he'll go back.

Is this possible in the near future?? Lets say Mack underachieves again at Texas, which is totally possible. They can him. Nick Saban Wins another title at Bama. Texas looking for a new coach, throws a ridiculous amount of money at Saban. Great coaches like new challenges.... Would Nick Saban do it? Is Texas capable of stealing coach Saban??

    no

  • If I was Dodd's when Mack retires I would back a Brinks truck up to Harbaugh's front door and ask if this will do it or do I need to send for another truck.

Money won't do much for Harbaugh (assuming you mean Jim), IIRC he took less money to go to the 49ers than he would have gotten from the Dolphins.

And I cant figure out why ya'll think he WONT go back. The guy is competitive, he wants to win and he likes a challenge. Anyone that is that competitive does not like to fail, and when they do they wont truely ever get over it until the succeed. He will go back to the NFL because it's his last challenge, he failed at that level and I can guarntee you he wont let that go. He could very well stay at Bama another 10 years years(doubt it), but I think he will test out the NFL one more time

If Harbaugh ever returns to college coaching, it will be to Michigan or Stanford.

Do you know why he left the NFL in the first place? He hated it. His wife hated it. He had no control over what players he could get (he wanted Brees, not Culpepper). NFL players don't respond to him like high school and college players do.

He fits in with the college game, i.e. recruiting, molding young players into men, complete control over the program. Those are the things he wants, not some dream of succeeding in the NFL cause he didn't before.

He's been contacted by multiple NFL teams the past couple seasons. He's too old to start over. He's retiring at Bama.

I'm not in a position to question anyone's personal motives much less their desires for their own personal image. What I can say is every time Saban has been asked about Alabama's success since his arrival in Tuscaloosa his answers have always been the same. He's most proud of the players, the fans, the administration and the state of Alabama. I can't think of a single time he suggested otherwise. Has some of that been coach speak? Of course it has and to suggest otherwise is naive at best, but to assume he hasn't grown as a person and had a few changes in his priorities since leaving LSU would be unfair given his current time at Alabama as well as his national perception compared to pre 2007.

I'm sure there's enough Saban ego left to make his departure seem as much his call than anyone else's so I won't argue that point, but I do think he's a different man in many ways than he was before wearing the Crimson and White.

IMO he retires at Bama, the only place he could go that would be a "step up" would be ND and there is a 0.0000001% chance that happens.

Serious? ND is a joke of a football program and has been for the last 20 years.
