We can't help it that the rest of you sucked for so long. I laugh at people who think UF, which didn't win its first title until the 1990s, and Oregon, which has yet to do so, deserve greater respect. And for all of Bama's success under Coach Saban, you were pretty pathetic for most of the decade prior to that. Michigan has played Bama three times, all in the past 20 years, and we are 2-1 in those games. And those wins have nothing to do eith our success in the early 1900s. The fact is that all programs go through cycles and, except for about 20 years after WWII and the three-year debacle that was the RR era, we have been nationally relevant in CFB for more than 130 years. That absolutely dwarfs all but a few programs.

But you are right that Michigan was overwhelmingly dominant in the early days of CFB and, in fact, is one of a handful of teams that invented the game and/or were responsible for its evolution into what we see on the field today. We make no apologies for that. We are, in fact, proud of it. We are also proud that, unlike most of the other elite programs from that era, we are the only one that remains consistently relevant today.

It's hard to do something well for 133 years. And every great CFB program has had a few down years here and there. But based on any measure - national championships, major conference championships, wins, win %, All Americans, Heismans and other major awards, coaches/players in the HOF, players drafted by the NFL, etc - Michigan is at or near the top in every category. Very, very, very few programs can say the same thing.

I agree with what you have said. Michigan in my mind is the most consistent program in the history of the game. Your streak of non-losing seasons was incredible. Your post does not conflict with my post. Michigan has had more good teams than anyone, but has had few great teams in the last 60-70 years. Alabama over the same time period has had some high-highs and some low-lows. As is my personal preference, I prefer having years where you can look back and say we were the greatest team of that year even if there are years mixed in that I would rather forget. That is just my opinion and of course doesn't have to be yours.

Yeah...I actually agree with everything you just said. I just think it's incredible that Michigan has only 1 national title the past 64 years considering how good Michigan has been. That's very surprising is all I'm saying.

National titles are weird things. You can have the best team in the country but lose one game at the wrong time and it gets away from you. I am not making excuses, but it is what it is. Look at Auburn in 2004. Or even take last year. Alabama was extremely lucky to make it to the BCSCG after losing to LSU. If Okie St (or maybe Houston or Boise or Oregon) had run the table, Alabama might have found itself on the outside looking in. A lot of things need to fall in place to win a national title and some are simply out of your control.

Well, that depends. If you want to acknowledge their old, pre-modern era titles...then you must acknowledge ours. If you will acknowledge our 14 titles then I will concede the point.

    I've trapped you.

I don't care how many you guys claim. Knock yourself out with how many you want to claim. It will be a number of years before you could possibly catch up to the Yale and Princeton juggernauts.

So you agree we have 14. Good. The fortunate thing for us if we will eventually catch them because they will never win another one while Saban alone will obviously win 4-5 more in the next 3-4 years.

College Football Data Warehouse awards us with 26, but I think they screwed us on a few. They give bama 13 so... I feel comfortable with my school's lead over the next 150 years, minimum.

Totally agree. We were lucky as all hell to make it in last year. Many teams that looked unbeatable and probably were the best teams in the country lost at unfortunate times and it cost them a championship.

Still, I'm only in my late 20's but I can't remember a time where Michigan was right there looking like the best team in America then lost a game and a chance at a title. Obviously, 2006 comes to mind but I think everyone knew Ohio State was going to win that game at home and then Michigan lost to USC anyways. I can remember Michigan doing that to Ohio State a couple times in the 90's but don't really remember Michigan losing a shot when it looked like they would win it all. I remember plenty of really good Michigan teams, sure, but not great ones. Again though, I wasn't around in the olden days.

As good as Saban is and as many titles as we claim, he'll figure out a way to get it done...trust me.

It's OBVIOUS. Only about 10 more years. You think Saban will retire by then or is he going to do a Bobby Bowden type tenure at Bama. Although he won't be fired.

Exactly. The 2006 game is a perfect example. There was a questionable personal foul call late in that game that allowed OSU to retain possession in Michigan territory. They ended up scoring a TD. Also, just by random chance, it was a home game for OSU and a road game for us. If either of those things are different, maybe we win the game and play UF for the MNC.

But you are also right, we knocked off several undefeated OSU teams in the 90s in the final game of the season despite the fact that they were clearly better than we were. I think one of those years we were a 7 or 8 win team, yet we beat OSU and cost them a possible natty. It happens to everyone.

I think his new contract runs through 2019 maybe? That's 8 more seasons and would put him at like 65 or something. I could see him hanging it up then, I don't think he will do a Bobby Bowden type exit. He doesn't seem like the type that would want to hang around and slowly get worse as the fans get restless. I'll just be happy if he coaches out the contract. 8 more seasons gives him enough time to build something truly historic and then walk away before he gets too old and starts going downhill.

Because nobody reading this has been around for 100 years. Yall have a great program but it is what it is.
