My guess is he had 3 schools in mind. ND and Michigan were the clear leaders and he wanted to go to either of those, but Penn State was in the back of mind as a third option. Then when ND and UM told him no, he went and visited PSU and loved it. Then he decided to commit.

Up until ND turned him down and he called UM to try to visit, he had not expressed any interest in Michigan whatsoever. That's part of why we turned him away, we had long since moved on from trying to recruit him and didn't want to possibly spook Pipkins and/or O'Brien (who we've been after much longer).

Schutt wasn't very vocal about his recruitment. He probably always liked UM, but not as much as ND and was planning on going to ND so he didn't express much interest. Then when ND turned him down, he came out and was more vocal about his love for UM. I'm glad as hell you guys didn't want him though.

Obviously psyched about the day that was for PSU recruiting, But I also want to say how great the 247 community is. This is not the reception to news like this that other sites' fans typically give to a rival school. But I guess if they don't go to Ohio State, we're all winners!
