Yea. Sadly. Luckily those people are a shrinking minority.

My parents are part of this so I say this soberly but when the oldest two generations (50+) die the United States and the developed world in general will be further from archaic ways of thinking, behavioral patterns of brutality and cruelty. Due to 3D printing and stem cell developments we wont need to slaughter animals anymore. I mean in 15 more years they are already predicting in America: totally equal male and female pay, universal health care is forming, organized religion is dissipating (like 36% of people 18-30 claim specific deistic faith. For the sake of science this needs to happen world wide asap. "Allah" might cause our species to not make it. Although I dont think anything can stop us. Even if its scorched earth for fifty years we will still get the ships built. And nuclear war would still leave a billion people pressing on.

I use a Mac Mini with Plex as my HTPC. It's awesome. And I can access my media server via Plex on my iPhone, laptop, Roku, etc.

I'm debating between Plex and XBMC right now, but there's a small part of me that wants to go with WMC so I can throw a Cable Card in there and really combine everything in one place. On the other hand, that would necessitate me paying for Windows, so Plex is certainly the cost-effective option. We'll see how it all comes together.

This is pretty revolutionary. We talked about this in a physics class once. Blending energy production into construction to minimize its intrusiveness. Just amazing.

i agree. if they can develop a composite material that can capture solar energy while remaining functional and not retaining/conducting heat - could be one of the greatest green inventions. imagine a skyscraper generating/recycling/storing it's own electricity..

Mind sets have shifted, China is pressuring all other countries by POURING money into renewables and green techs. It's going to be awesome. I expect the US to start smart gridding a city like Chicago very soon.

  • We dont even need any order of magnitude breakthroughs going forward in terms of energy. Over next 10 years the industrialized world must keep developing and integrating solar, wind, geothermal into a ubiquitous energy smart grid which will get integrated into global, cloud based super computing. In 10 years we will be making waves of headway in that effort and shortly thereafter comes 4th generation nuclear which is far cleaner, more efficient, etc. Basically any negative impressions of past nuclear issues wont even pertain to 4th gen.

  • To disagree, I think, with something BLF posted earlier is that although the world giants are really striving towards green, renewable, smart energy there will likely be full implementation in developing countries first because there are no established billion dollar companies who arent ready to transition yet.

The actions of BP, Exxon, etc show that they not only see where things are going but have also likely gotten the memo, "Stay big oil and be rich for another 25 years and then bankrupt or start to diversify now"

That said, the innovations and improvements in the next 5-10 years will provide Americans with the ability to truly shift away from fossil fuels but there will be a lot of inertia because of those HUGE oil companies and the government protecting them, rightfully so for a few more years.

If solar improves as much as expected the next 5 years it will be ubiquitous in Africa/Asia by 2020-2022.

    fsufsu

  • I disagree. The big energy companies (especially the Asian and Middle East ones) are balls deep in the developing world.

That said, as the price of panels and other means of renewables fall, it would make it just as likely to see imports in these areas as well since the production facilities also lie in countries that house the fossil fuel companies like China,US,Germany etc.

  • Talk about exponential. Wind power to double in seven years to 100 GW in 2015 and then in five years to 200 GW in 2020.

And we are still having to debate yearly about whether to extend the PTC. facepalm_msu

Wind Surpasses Nuclear in China : TreeHugger

Wind has overtaken nuclear as an electricity source in China. In 2012, wind farms generated 2 percent more electricity than nuclear power plants did, a gap that will likely widen dramatically over the next few years as wind surges ahead.

I hear you. I've told my wife, in two or three years I am going to become a certified solar panel installer and then move to a progressive city/county/state. The bad ass stories you hear about some UPS and FEDEX drivers making 100 grand a year or something, with 1/10th the overtime you'll be pulling in 6 figures for sure. Just 8-4:30, installing panels, never lifting more than 20lbs. Badass.

I'm thinking everyone's house becomes its own cottage industry for everything. The only thing businesses could really focus on with actual physical goods is supplying the parts. You can't really 3-D print a service, so they are safe.

Hell, more than an aroma - that manipulation and megalomaniacal motivation are some of the cornerstones of Scientology's philosophy.
