Scientist around the world say Global Warming

Is that why I've been seeing so many socks with sandals? Makes so much more sense

Indeed, don't wanna have to scrub charcoal briquettes and soot off your ankles. That can be harsh...

  • Lots of fail in this thread. My God, you bitch about stupid religious nonsense all day long with Obama being a Muslim and stuff and the debt but the one thing that will eradicate all HUMAN life, you balk? Good riddance you ignorant asses. Glad we will never meet again.

That's what I wanted to say, but I'll Just ask, do your part and reduce reuse recycle and stop supporting China and bring back the America I love.

And how much federal funding do scientists get each year to study climate change?

I don't know the numbers for climate change, but the US is investing less and less in academic research and development (both in terms of inflation adjusted dollars and % of the GDP) while countries like China are ramping things up. You can look up the numbers of the NSF's website. Not a good situation for the future.

I read an article recently that the ozone layer would be completely repaired by 2050-2060 reversing many of the harmful effects we have felt due to its absence

Obviously that study must have been paid for by the oil companies and/or The Heritage Foundation.

Serious question: From the political angle, what do scientist have to gain from things like this? When the first "Global Warming Panic" happened, were research institutes inundated with grant money?

Oh. Hell. Yes. It's ALWAYS about money, no matter what it is.

"Quit trying to make a play and do your job!"

  • Big deal about global warming, just means some beachside property will be lost to the sea. Frankly I think the whole thing is BS myself.

I mean obviously it couldnt be true if it's not in line with the Democratic agenda.

But the scientists don't simply get to pocket grant money, it has to go towards more research. If it's been earmarked for more research on global warming, then they can only use it for that. If they don't think global warming exists and are just BS'ing the nation for money and the above conditions are met, what did they gain? More money for global warming research. Unless you think global warming is an issue, what's the point in getting money to research it further?

    To have a job.

That, and also maybe they actually think global warming (or, rather climate change) is a real thing. It's not happening at the insanely fast rate the fear-mongers screamed about at the beginning of the millenium nor does each person have as much of an effect on the situation as we were led to believe, but grant money and job security aside, the scientific community obviously thinks things are changing, however slowly they may be. And yet, people continue to just blow it off as BS. Why?

  • Not man made! And to have a job!

    LBU59

  • And I also have a hard time believing as many scientists as there have been pushing research showing the presence of climate change (again, however slow and minute it may be) are simply lying to keep their jobs. Sure, I realize there are desperate nutjobs in every profession, but as many as we've seen step forward? Call me an idealist if you want, but I just can't buy that.

Maybe I just hoped the human race took more pride and respect in their work.

So is the prevailing opinion that climate change (if it is happening now) isn't caused by man or that climate change could never be caused by man?

Is happening around 30 times faster than previously thought. They say they have proof that now along with natural greenhouse gas, there is now evidence of man made greenhouse gas present in the atmosphere. So take warning folks.....instead of it reaching temps in the High 80's in winter months by the year 4768, it could come as quick as 3967. Personally, I'm stoked. The whole world will be a tropical paradise.

Probably because every time we hear about it the solutions are always things like raising taxes, along with a bunch of hippie BS. Just seems pretty obvious a lot if BSing is going on when all the solutions are conveniently things that a certain political persuasion has been pushing for years. Seems to me so called global warming is just another way of attempting to get those things done.

Screw taxes. I don't want more taxes and never have as part of any sort of environmental initiative. Quite honestly, I don't have any answers. You can pitch ideas like recycling, green energy initiatives, less deforestation, etc. ad nauseum. But unless a significant number of people (and industries) start doing it, there won't be any positive effects, and even then, they'll be minimal at best. But that concept scares me, because it makes it sound like we're on some unstoppable highway to killing our planet, even if we or our children or their children won't have to live through it. Or maybe the sun will just blow up first and we can blame it on that.

I just want people to care is all.

If you work in the climate science field you don't eat unless you toe the line. That's pretty significant. It's not like these guys can just quit their jobs and go back to school to get a second PHD in something else.

I'm not injecting any opinions on global warming, but that is indeed how it works. You say they can only use the money for research, but that's not how it works. Their paycheck comes out of that grant too.

It would be great if we could find a way to remove all agendas from science, but I don't see how. Instead it seems we just ignore the actual science and look for the agenda. People don't ask to see the actual data and results of tests, they just want to know who paid for it.

Oh I know, I just don't like it. But at the same time, there's nothing we can do to change it. This isn't a new phenomenon. People care more about money, wealth, power, et al than they do about integrity, morality, respect, and hell, just doing good work. Not to mention that giving a sh!t about your fellow man is and has always been basically frowned upon for whatever reason.

Somehow I'm an idealist and a cynic at the same time.

    To have a job.

They don't need research dollars for global warming to have a job, especially the ones employed by the university. However, it should be stated that professors are allowed to pay themselves 30% of their salary for the summer off of grant money.

Scientists in the fields pertinent to global warming have had jobs and done research for many years before they started investigating global warming. The money used to fund global warming research would simply go to fund something else in their field. Researchers rarely work on the same problems their entire career. My phd advisor did his phd in diffusion of ions in metals. All of his research is now focused on the physics of how things like shampoo, silly putty, and other interesting materials work.

Additionally, there is most likely a lot of valuable science/results from the global warming research that can be used in other areas of research. I've worked on nanoparticles my entire science career, but some of our results have impacted fields such as mathematics and drug delivery.
