Most regard 92 Bama has the best defense ever. They played Miami which at the time was considered an offensive juggarnaut and we shut it down. It's all about schemes and Saban has the best one I have ever seen.

Look south and rewind 4 years... 8.8 points a game.

  • I only see ONE NFL caliber QB in the SEC and he plays at GA which has no Oline and no running game. No idea what Miami does but The QB play that Bama went against was subpar. I think they were a great defense but helped greatly by the ineptitude of the offenses they played.

    Pic Sigs are for losers.

  • Only team to ever shut out an openent in the championship game and gave up on 90 something yards...total. Also, LSU crossed the 50 once all night.

Yes, I know we are looking at the full season, but our defense is at worst top 5 all time.

They played 1 offense in the top 50 total offenses all year.

Sorry, but if the mediots had any sense... they would point out that Tyler Wilson was the only good QB and Ark was the only offense they played.

    No it wasn't.

    Best Championship Preformance... yes.

You played ONE TEAM WHO WAS IN THE TOP 50 IN TOTAL OFFENSE ALL YEAR.

    Not surprised you disagree.

  • You're pretty stupid imo comparing Miami's defense to the 11 Bama defense. Bama was statistically better and will have more drafted in the NFL.

Do you realize that Bama's 08 recruiting class will have 6-7 NFL first round draft picks?

Why, because I am an AU fan? Wow, good logic... I was giving out praise last night, all night. I recognize greatness and that wasn't a top 5 greatest defenses of all time.

  • I thought this thread was going to have more input from other fans considering what NoVaNoles mentioned in the original post...but it seems like it turned into an '01 Canes vs. '11 Tide thread.

When I think of best defense of all time, I think of '74 and '85 Oklahoma, '71 Nebraska, '92 Bama, and '01 Canes among others.

'11 Bama played great defense, especially last night, and Saban is a master at scheming his defenses, especially when he has time (a month) to prepare. However, over the course of the season, Bama played some pretty poor offenses. Total offense rankings of Bama's FBS opponents this season: 86, 105, 28, 98, 88, 114, 107, 57, 72, 91 and 57. I know some of those offenses were down because they had to play Bama, LSU, etc., but the SEC as a whole was down this year on offense, except for Arkansas and Bama.

Ranking #1 in several defensive categories this season is amazing but, as someone else mentioned, I'm not even sure '11 Tide was the best Bama defense ever considering what the '92 Bama defense did.

I searched for a list of the best CFB defenses of all time and found one (that wasn't on bleacherreport.com), which lists some of the ones I mentioned above, as well as the '61 Bama defense as #1 of all time. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/20470078/

Its true that Alabama did beat some bad offenses this year but the one thing that I noticed in last night's game was LSU was SLOPPY.

While I am by no means an Alabama fan, I cannot help but wonder if Alabama's defense intimidated them...

When I think all-time great defenses, I think intimidation.

Okay, I see it being mentioned

I just want to say I thought Bama was the best team all year and a true national champion for the most part

Certainly the best team I saw all year and I felt that way after the LSU loss

Maybe its an FSU thing but I know what its like to miss a FG and still think your team was the better team

But that being said your defense was not the greatest of all time... How many of you actially believe this and why ? Im interested, not flaming

For me the 01' Canes were better still, I'd take every level of that defense over yours

Hard to compare them overall but in their championship seasons I have to give the Canes the edge

Top 5 though and possibly #2 of all time, make your case if you must and if any others wanna lay a claim im all ears

I don't think it's the best, but it seems like most people rate college defenses based on what the players go on to do in the NFL. Miami was loaded with NFL players on that 2001 defense. If they had all gone on to the NFL and been busts, would people still say they are the best?

    Simply the best

  • I believe its Bama but its hard to compare from one year to the next. You keep bringing up one player on that defense and he may very well be better than anyone on Bama's D but we are talking about a defense as a whole and as a whole Bama's is better I mean only gave up 9 TD's all year long and played LSU's best team ever (before the game it was the best team ever in college football history) twice! They score only 9 points in 8 Qtrs. of football! Yeah IMO its Bama 2011!

    Bamaradar

  • What our D accomplished this year is unheard of in today's game, considering how much the game has changed even over the last ~10-20 years. #1 in all major categories, allowed 9 td's on the season, shut out a team that averaged over 40 PPG (outside of the games against Bama) against a STRONG schedule in the NCG, and allowed only 8.2 PPG, which is the lowest in quite awhile, I believe.

I don't care if we played the worst O in the country every week, the numbers speak volumes. I'm not going to say it was the best D of all time, but I can say with confidence it is top 5. It might not have as much talent as Miami '01 but it had superior scheme/coaching.

    TylerDD

  • Take the 11 that lined up last night against any thats ever played.
