The individuals were acting on behalf of and with the consent of the University. There has to be accountability both with the individuals and with the University. If you hire people of questionable character to run your University, and I mean this in any department of the university, there will be consequences. The players need not be punished. They should be free to transfer anywhere they wish, or stay if they wish. The University screwed up royal.
I would feel the same if it was Michigan State.

All I'm saying is, the repercussions outweigh the punishment IMO. Make the AD give all profits away to a charity or something like that. You don't only affect people who had no involvement with this situation, in a place like PSU that isn't in a big city and is really the only big draw, you hurt the community, too. Think of what no football would mean economically? And there are probably people working there who don't even like Penn State. Do they deserve that punishment?
All I'm saying is, there's effectively punishing PSU and more importantly the criminals involved and then there's destroying a community. Obviously we don't want to be too light, but I'd hate to think that a couple of sick old men could destroy a culture that embodies hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

Oh please. Yes, we thought Paterno was an honorable man and we had reasons for it (no NCAA violations, graduated players, gave back to the university and the town...). In November, there was reason to give Joe the benefit of a doubt and wait to see what came out. I have always said that I wanted to see a smoking gun. I have seen the gun, not I want Paterno's statue down, his name cleared off the library and I do not want to see any kind of celebration of his records.
It's easy for other fans to act like we are ridiculous, but you never had a man do so much for your university and then fail so miserably. It's infuriating.

ever thought part of the reason that you never had violations was because Joe had such a grip on everything that went on and made sure people didn't snitch.... Just a thought. I feel bad for the PSU fans that hero worshipped this dude, but most of us have said all along that you were all delusional for not seeing through the rouse.

Yep, I wish I didn't delete all mine, but I'm positive it was you after I suggested we should donate the funds from our last home game to victims of child abuse. You told me I was just doing it to look good and didn't actually give a fvck about the victims and that I was a horrible person. You may have done it in the thread I made, so I pm'ed you first to avoid cluttering the board and then you responded with your drivel, but either way, there was a PM involved.

Of course that is a possibility, but why would a PSU fan think that? We have seen him sit out starters because they were doing as well in the class room as Joe wanted them to (they were still eligible). I have seen our starting MLB suspended for three games for a prank phone call. There was no reason to believe, back in November, that we covered NCAA violations up. Now, who knows. Nothing would surprise me.

Joe was playing cards - exactly what you do when you are covering things up - PSU practiced "self-reporting" of minor violations to create the smoke screen perception that everything was run squeaky clean........It also created a persona about Joe that he was "by the book"
In the end Joe held true to form by playing the "clueless old man" - you cannot deny that he was very instrumental in this coverup and may have been the chief decision maker.

I keep hearing this, but no one can ever point to any evidence. The only thing they say is that nothing like this could have happened without JoePa being involved. It's pure supposition. Where is the evidence he was instrumental? Where is the evidence he was the chief decision maker?

Should JoePa's statue be torn down?
