I keep hearing this, but no one can ever point to any evidence. The only thing they say is that nothing like this could have happened without JoePa being involved. It's pure supposition. Where is the evidence he was instrumental? Where is the evidence he was the chief decision maker?

New emails have come out lately that suggest he knew about it and wanted to downplay it for Sandusky.
BTW I think all of the PSU fans have been pretty good about all of this. Most of them know that their people in charge failed them. They defended JoePa on what they knew as facts. Most fans would protect a beloved member of their school until facts came out.

Saying the emails "suggest" something is very different than saying they "prove" something. Curley and Schultz gave testimony to the grand jury. For all I know, one or both testified at Sandusky's trial. Is there anything in their testimony where they say JoePa told them not to go to the authorities? Or even that he asked or encouraged them not to do so? Paterno was in his mid 80s. He could barely keep on top of what was going on with the football program week to week. And the allegations involved an assistant coach who had retired 10 years earlier. It seems very reasonable that, as he said, he reported the matter to superiors who he thought would fully investigate it and handle it properly based on the outcome of the investigation. Clearly that wasn't enough. JoePa publicly said, in hindsight, he wished he did more. But that's a huge difference from saying he knew what was going on for years and actively worked to cover it up.

I've read the ESPN story. First, the emails appear to be only among Schultz, Curley and Spanier. Paterno was not included. If Paterno was intimately involved and directing the cover-up, why wasn't he part of the email group? Second, nothing in the emails contradict anything Paterno said under oath in his grand jury testimony. He said he spoke with Curley on the phone on the Saturday that Mike McQueary reported the shower incident to him. He said he then went to Curley's home the next day (Sunday) to discuss it further. And he said he spoke with Curley again about a week later as a follow up. What is wrong with that? How is that unusual or unexpected or criminal? I would be shocked if he didn't discuss it with Curley. And we didn't need these emails to know all this. Paterno admitted to these discussions with Curley under oath.
I'm an attorney, which means I tend to focus on facts. It doesn't matter what you believe to be true based on personal assumptions or gut feelings. It only matters what you can prove. These emails hardly prove Paterno was directing a cover up. They actually confirm his testimony to the grand jury that he spoke to Curley three times. I'm not saying Paterno wasn't involved in the cover-up, just that these emails don't prove he was.

You cannot possibly be serious.
When the plan is to speak with Sandusky, inform Second Mile, and report to the Department of Welfare and things change the next day AFTER Paterno is consulted, its clear he was instrumental in hiding it.
Go read the reports. The term smoking gun fits perfectly. He was covering his old ass.

Read the article I linked.
Curley clearly states that he spoke with Joe and is hesitant to include anyone else as previously planned. Why the hell would be change his mind after speaking with Paterno if Paterno was all for taking the report to the authorities?
Come on, you cannot be that daft.

You are assuming causation. I don't know what caused Curley to have second thoughts, but one way to find out is to ask him. And Schultz and Spanier. Maybe Curley asked Paterno to recite again the version of the incident McQueary had told him and he became uncomfortable because the three versions McQueary had told him, Schultz and Paterno didn't match up. Or maybe something else caused Curley to hesitate going to the authorities. You can't just assume it was a directive from Paterno. Well, you can, but that's all it is ... an assumption.
Pic Sigs are for losers.

So?
An athletic facility in the Midwest bears my grandfathers name and if this kind of garbage came out about him, I would want it renamed. Just because someone can afford to donate does not mean they should be admired or bestowed with such an honor.
