Should welfare recipients have to pass a urine drug test

  • I think if the welfare recipients are tested then politicians should be as well.

This as well, all they receive is government money, even if it is state government.

ha ha ha ha ha ha... morons

No one said they are the reason we are going broke. No one even suggested that we stop paying them. Only that if they are on drugs, they shouldn't get money. Try and keep up.

So those that say yes, can you explain why you would still say yes despite the fact that the NYT and the Miami Herald have reported on the cost of Florida's testing that have yielded such minimal results?

Because no one is federally mandated to support my bad habits. Why should tax payers be federally mandated to pay for those that do drugs? It's really not even a cost savings issue in my mind. It's just what's right and wrong.

What makes it not fine? The fact that the kids there don't give a damn, because they come from families that don't give a damn?

Oh wait, or can we fix all of this by paying teachers more?

Most of them come from broken families where they have no role models in their lives. Inner-city schools just don't have the right resources to give these kids the help they really need. Private schools are successful with these kids by keeping them in school year round and having longer school days. Our public schools need to adapt a similar stance. It's an investment. If we can turn these kids into productive members of our society then it's all worth it. Statistics show that they're likely to end up living off the tax payer's dime in prison.

We will. Taxpayers. I think when 35-50% test positive it could actually save us money.

Yea, NC has a "Workfirst/Foodstamp" program that i actually oversee for 1 particular county. There is no way around having the taxpayers pay for drug screens (people on Food Stamps usually don't have verifiable income).....BUT, if they fail a drug screen, their benefits are cut off (which theoretically saves the taxpayers money).....BUT, you have idiotic social workers who could give a sh!t if someone smokes crack and gets food stamps. Thats where the problems lies (at least in NC). There are certain counties who follow the rules, but most don't.

IF there was a legit system in place it would work, but money is being wasted in NC b/c the system is bullshit. It would work, but rules would have to be mandated under federal/state purgery or other type of laws.

They're scared to hire people in an incredibly hostile business environment. Or would you prefer another answer to why corporations have consistently created jobs until recently?

Corporations hoarding cash and minimizing hiring has nothing to do with a "hostile" business environment. Productivity has been increasing with less workers has attributed to a lack of hiring equal to profits. Political uncertainty, not hostility has contributed to cash hoarding. They are waiting to see who gets elected because it will be the difference in having Obamacare and not, corporate tax rates, extension of subsidies etc. Moreover, the last four years have been full of short-term tax credits etc. that make long-term planning even more cloudy.

Why the hell would I want to pay $5000 for a cell phone made by Cell Phone Workers Local #123 that pays into their benefits and pensions and salary for union bosses and political bribes when I could have it made in China instead?

The manufacturing sector as our grandparents knew it is dead. If people can't adapt I don't feel sorry for them. The better example to use is not clothes or consumer electronics but cars. Those folks in Tennessee building Toyotas are quite happy with their wages, and they're quite happy with the fact they have 401Ks like the rest of us instead of unsustainable pensions and absurd benefits that would eliminate their employer's ability to stay competitive.

Cost of production discrepancy has little to do with unionization. Even if an American worker took minimum wage making an iPhone,it would still be about x3 as much as a typical Chinese worker. There are also other things involved as well.

I also don't think his point was anti-free trade just pointing it out as a product of the recent Recession.

Is that not a fair question? Seriously? Is it unconstitutional?

Actually it is pretty easy at the federal level (don't know about each state's constitution).

Is welfare a right? No, it is not a right as defined in the US Constitution.

Thus b/c it is not a right, the gov't can provide it (not required to do so) and in so doing can attach strings (drug test or ...) as long as they do not discriminate based on sex, race ...

Whether or not states can restrict it similarly depends on their state constitution and the law the governs the funds (does the Fed provide all of the money to the states? what strings are attached?...).

Not true, this would only be the case if welfare were a right guaranteed by the constitution, which it isn't.

Think about driving a car (collecting a check). Sobriety check points (drug tests) are allowed because you agree to them when you applied for your license (welfare).

You just spoke the truth. Corporations are having record profits and profit margins because of extremely cheap labor in China and the rest of the countries that slave out their people. I'm all for giving corporation tax cuts if it means moving those jobs back and paying our people decent wages and decent benefits. Unfortunately, Americans are worried about paying a little more for those goods we currently get from China.

Actually just drop the corporate/business tax all together and move toward a consumption tax. The consumer pays the tax right now anyway (either them or initial investors). A consumption tax eliminates the middle man, simpler and less waste (the resources the company/gov't spend on their tax accounting can be put to other uses). Also, it eliminates the tax advantage for companies moving overseas. Taxes are not the only reason to move overseas, but it would help.

Why would I? The ACLU already denounced it. I'm just guessing. I would gladly pay a 30 dollars extra every week to fund 52 tests a year for the poor. But I'm a giver. Or the government. Could just cut a national guard troop here or there and fund it. Wouldn't cost the poor anything.

Gonig is a big time Lib.. If you don't agree, just let it go.

(Like ya Gonig, just not politically)

But, I don't think drug testing is necessary here. You still would have to pay for drug testing kits, workers to do the testing and a lot of other expenses.... I just don't think it's fair to civilians to have to take a DT to get their checks.. And I am one of the biggest in hating people that use welfare or have kids just to get more checks.. People that can work but are lazy.. But DT shouldn't be required, IMO.

But let's think outside the box, what's the difference? As long as someone doesn't show up to the job drunk, do we care that they go home and get drunk? No. I have the same attitude about marijuana.

If you test for alcohol it clears up in a hour a beverage, if you test for pot it will show up for a week. So if someone is driving or hurts themselves at work you give them an alcohol test and it will see if they drunk or not, that day. Give them a pot test and weed can show up from 3 days ago. So boom you fired or get a DUI. From a joint 3 days ago, just stupid so it's illegal

Private schools parents pay tuition so they can update school supplies.
Public schools it's free for kids and they rely on the government to update and the gov is broke so no updates.
