Sign petition to define Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group

  • This petition seeks to define the Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group rather than a religious organization. They have historically been recognized much like any other church, including tax exempt status. The Obama administration is required to respond to petitions that gather over 25,000 signatures. Please sign the petition.

  • Not to be a debbie downer, but when these petitions get 25,000 signatures, you pretty much just get a form letter saying, 'thanks we'll look into it'.

    I still signed though.

  • Im just glad we are to the point where NO ONE considers them Christians.

These people are an abomination culturally, philosophically, spiritually, etc.

Definitely, but this is the sort of situation where an easy executive order would be really popular and could do a lot of good, even if later overturned by the courts.

Given how unpopular the Obama administration is regarding the *ahem* "War on Christmas", I imagine his top aides will tell him to simply leave the issue alone, at least until well into next year.

No reason to give people like Hannity anything for ammo.

Trust me, eliminating these people's rights would be greatly lauded in Christian and quasi Christian and Christian-when-it-benefits-them circles. Foxnews falls somewhere in that.

There is also the 'whatever Obama does is wrong' crowd, like the guy in the CT shooting thread who knocked Obama for addressing the shooting with a speech. I would say Hannity and Limbaugh fall into this category. I don't think the Obama administration is going to want to risk them spinning this and inciting the christian groups in the US.

Even if they can't get the christian groups mad, there's always the 'Why isn't Obama doing more to stop the fiscal cliff from kicking in' argument that can get fiscal conservatives PO'd.

No reason to touch this if you're Obama.

  • I can't believe that a petition has to be signed to classify them as such. I thought this one has been obvious for a decade or more now.

What exactly were they picketing for today? I know about them picketing soldiers funerals because they said that gays in the military were the reason for the death over there. What exactly are they pissed about when it comes to these children. Are they assuming that one of the 8 year olds were gay?

Makes no sense to me, but nothing these nutjobs do are exactly of sound logic. I'm assuming that they are now just picking any tragedy to get their names in the papers and recruit as many other nutjobs out there that they can. For every 10,000 people that see this as obvious lunatic BS, there is one person that that will agree and join.

  • They're the ultimate trolls, and it makes me sick to see the legal system abused the way they do it.

They take free speech to its extreme, and as soon as anyone (understandably) lashes out against them, they sue. Fred Phelps raised a brood of lawyers who all understand a rigid, formulaic process for extracting money from those people who've already been hurt more than enough.
