just hate Romney because he is twofaced and a slick...ron paul is ron paul...santorum should give up (not enough money) so that leaves me with the least of evils which is Newt in my opinion...i think Obama would love Romney to win because he would just say "hey we have the same ideas, you just get the support of republicans"

Yeah, I could see that. I guess if I were voting republican it would ultimately come down to who I hate more - Romney or Obama. Romney is pretty much tied with Obama in national polls at ~48-50%, whereas Newt trails 38-50, so to me it looks like you either stick to your guns and end up with Obama being re-elected or you bite the bullet and go with Romney and keep your fingers crossed that the economy doesn't improve too much before November. If it makes you feel any better, my vote never counts either way.

I'm a democrat in Alabama. The day this state goes back to blue will be the day the Saban/Newton ticket wins the Democratic nomination.

That having been said, I vote every time.

Ok, just wanted to hear some opinions. I was listening to NPR on Friday, and there was a southern Baptist representative who said he had a lot of acquaintances who wouldn't vote for anyone who isn't Christian.

Yeah that's crap. I go to a Southern Baptist church and about half the people there are Romney people. I don't really think it's nearly the issue people say it is.

yeah i understand what you mean...are you a democrat based on social or fiscal views? or both?

  • That article is stupid and doesn't make any sense. To convince me I am going to have to see a breakdown of the math in regards to delegates.

Being off the ballot in VA, MO, and partially TN does not make it mathematically impossible to win the nomination. Not to mention the Romney campaign would have most definitely brought this up by now in order to show people that votes for Newt and Santorum would be wasted votes.

And the media would be all over it.

So I am calling BS. Dumb article, dumb thread.

A little bit of both. In my family it goes back a few generations. My great-grandparents on both sides were share croppers in north Alabama and so my grandparents all grew up in pretty much abject poverty. They lived in shacks and grew crops growing up and didn't have electricity or paved roads until the New Deal created the TVA which basically brought that region into the 20th century. My grandfathers both ran away from home to join the war and were able to get an education via the GI bill and helped bring my parents up in middle-class households. My parents were both able to get full schollys to college and get good jobs to provide for me and my siblings. My grandparents never forgot where they came from or why they were able to escape from the cycle of poverty that had held their parents and grandparents pretty much since the Civil War and always stressed to my parents and my generation that if you ever made it out it was always your duty to reach back and try to help others out as well. As one said, "A good Republican wants everybody to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and a good Democrat realizes that some people don't have straps to pull themselves up by." Being from the South, they were always stubborn as hell and worked for everything they ever got, but all realized that they wouldn't have gotten anywhere without a little help to get beyond a situation they couldn't control. I think that's why I consider myself a pretty moderate Democrat, because I believe if you have the "straps" and don't use them then you deserve what you get, but also realize that some people just can't help it.

I do think that the wealthy should be taxed at a greater rate, and I get most of that from my parents. They grew up without much and went on to have quite a bit so they know what it means to scrape by and also to have extra to give, which is what the idea of a progressive tax system is all about.

As far as social views, I personally don't see how anybody from the South, Alabama in particular, could not be. What we did to people down here was beyond despicable and even though I had nothing to do with it, I feel like we know the cost of discrimination against people for any reason more than any other group and should always be mindful of that.

yeah i get where you come from...i just can't wrap my head around people on welfare their entire lives, it was a great idea that has been executed horribly in my opinion. also i don't know if the gap you described back in the day applies today? being from montgomery i see the poverty but also see the lack of enthusiasm to change it because of handouts? I believe firmly in everyone getting an equal chance but i also believe my parents work their asses off so that i have a better chance than most going forward in life (both came from rather poor households)

I completely agree. I think the system has become bastardized, but I also think that at it's core, when used properly, it serves a good purpose. I've been given a lot by my parents in my lifetime, but I feel that I've also fully utilized that opportunity to further myself. I guess at the same time it really pisses me off to hear frat guys that grew up with everything (I did too, I'm not trying to "class bait") go off on people who haven't had the same advantages they had growing up like they know what the hell they're talking about. I'm in med school right now and do most of my work at a medicaid/medicare hospital, and sometimes you can tell from the start that the children being born have almost no chance of making it, and that's where I think the point of welfare comes in - it's not about keeping the "welfare queens" propped up, it's about trying to give their kids any help they can to get the hell out. That having been said, it doesn't always (or even usually?) work out like that. So ultimately I think it comes down to a cost/effect ratio debate - are you willing to spend "x" amount of money to help "y" amount of people while simultaneously enabling "z" amount of people. I don't really think there's any right answer, but I do like being able to have a civil, intelligent debate with others about it. That's one thing that I've gotten from growing up surrounded by Republicans, how to have discourse hopefully without pissing anybody off haha.

yeah the era of republicans vs. democrats is over in my opinion...now it's transforming into liberals vs. conservatives and moderates usually being the correct ones in the whole situation. I just don't like the new health care plan or SS or any form of redistribution of wealth that is unwarranted. this election should be interesting because if ron paul runs as an independent he will take all the college votes obama got in 2008 because that's their rallying cry this time haha funny how easily the hipster kids change their minds

So do I. But their fiscal policy more than makes up for it. In the real world economics far exceed social issues in importance.

  • Newt has done nothing but back-track and dance around giving direct answers. Same with Romney. Ron Paul and Santorum are the only two who are simply answering the questions clearly without talking down or blaming others for problems.
